Field Radiometry and Ocean Color Remote Sensing
2010Since the early 1980s, with the onset of missions for global mapping of marine biomass, accurate in-situ radiometric data has become a pressing need to support satellite ocean color applications. This work presents a brief introduction to in-situ marine optical radiometry through an overview of absolute calibration, measurement methods, uncertainties ...

Impact of sea ice on ocean color remote sensing
SPIE Proceedings, 2005We study two types of contamination of Ocean Color data related to the presence of sea ice. The first type, referred to as the adjacency effect, is the contamination of the radiance from the intended target by photons scattered in atmosphere towards the sensor but originating from a bright object such as sea ice nearby the target.

Noise and model uncertainties in ocean color remote sensing
SPIE Proceedings, 2009The performance of ocean color inversion algorithms is strongly impacted by the various sources of uncertainties, including measurement noise, calibration noise, pre-processing and radiation transfer modeling uncertainties. In this work, an attempt at assessing the overall departure of theory from measurements is conducted based on an in-situ ...

Remote sensing of atmospheric aerosol and ocean color for the COMS/GOCI
SPIE Proceedings, 2010The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) on board the Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS) requires accurate atmospheric correction for the purpose of qualified ocean remote sensing. Since its eight bands are affected by atmospheric constituents such as gases, molecules and atmospheric aerosols, understanding of aerosolradiation ...

Ocean Color Remote Sensing Systems: Radiometric Requirements
SPIE Proceedings, 1988A methodology for specifying the radiometric requirements for ocean color remote sensing systems is described. Consideration is given to the noise equivalent radiance, the saturation radiance, the polarization sensitivity, and the calibration and stability. The degree of polarization across a scan line for the CZCS and MODIS orbits is presented.

A Small Autonomous Surface Vehicle for Ocean Color Remote Sensing
IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 2007This paper provides a study on the development and the use of a small autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) that automatically follows programmed mission transects, while measuring sensor outputs along the tracks. It discusses the mechanical construction of the ASV, the distributed architecture of controller area network (CAN)-based nodes for science and ...

The integrated management system of ocean color remote sensing data
SPIE Proceedings, 2009The integrated management system of ocean remote sensing data (IMSORS) has recently become more and more important as the data volume growing exponential, the data diversity increasing, and the developing of the marine research, and so on. IMSORS evolves into a service-oriented architecture (SOA) that provides the flexibility, multi-scale, and ...

Remote-sensing monitoring of colored dissolved organic matter in the Arctic Ocean
Marine Pollution BulletinIn the Arctic Ocean, variations in the colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) have important value and significance. This study proposed and evaluated a novel method by combining the Google Earth Engine with a multilayer back-propagation neural network to retrieve CDOM concentration.

Some Reflections on ThirtyFive Years of Ocean Color Remote Sensing
2010In the first 15 or so years of my 35-year involvement in ocean color remote sensing, I was fortunate to have witnessed and participated in much of the early development of this enterprise. In this chapter I relate those that had a significant impact on the subject and on my own work, and try to describe the historical setting in which they took place ...
