Waterfowl Move Less in Heterogeneous and Human‐Populated Landscapes, With Implications for Spread of Avian Influenza Viruses

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 29, Issue 1, January 2026.
We show that non‐migratory waterfowl movement distances are shorter in areas of high land cover heterogeneity and human population density, and that these movement distances are related to the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza. These results suggest that habitat management could contribute to the spread of these viruses.

Integration of Multiple Data Types to Document Spatial Effort in a Recreational Fishery for Highly Migratory Species in Relation to Offshore Wind Development

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, Volume 35, Issue 1, Page 33-48, January 2026.
ABSTRACT The expansion of offshore wind interests in US waters has raised concern over potential adverse impacts to fisheries activity and productivity. Yet evidence‐based platforms for assessing those impacts are lacking for many recreational fisheries.

Epilithic Algal and Meiofaunal Assemblages of Arctic/Alpine Lakes and Streams Along Latitudinal and Environmental Gradients in Scandinavia

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Epilithic biofilms along a latitudinal gradient of Arctic/alpine lakes and streams were analysed for their composition of algae (incl. cyanobacteria) and meiofaunal assemblages and correlated these with environmental variables. The composition of algal, meiofauna and nematode assemblages differed between lakes and streams.

Localized and Transient Oxygenation of Shallow Oceans of Southwestern Laurentia at the Ediacaran–Cambrian Boundary

open access: yesGeobiology, Volume 24, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
ABSTRACT The Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary, which precedes one of the most significant biotic diversification events in Earth's history, is associated with a global negative carbon isotope excursion termed the BAsal Cambrian carbon isotope Excursion (BACE).
