Heat content variability in the North Atlantic Ocean in ocean reanalyses

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2015
AbstractWarming of the North Atlantic Ocean from the 1950s to 2012 is analyzed on neutral density surfaces and vertical levels in the upper 2000 m. Three reanalyses and two observational data sets are compared. The net gain of 5 × 1022 J in the upper 2000 m is roughly 30% of the global ocean warming over this period.

Interannual variability of sea level in the southern Indian Ocean: local vs. remote forcing mechanisms [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2022
The subtropical southern Indian Ocean (SIO) has been described as one of the world's largest heat accumulators due to its remarkable warming during the past 2 decades.

Ocean heat content variability and change in an ensemble of ocean reanalyses [PDF]

open access: yesClimate Dynamics, 2015
Accurate knowledge of the location and magnitude of ocean heat content (OHC) variability and change is essential for understanding the processes that govern decadal variations in surface temperature, quantifying changes in the planetary energy budget, and developing constraints on the transient climate response to external forcings.

Anomalous Oceanic Conditions in the Central and Eastern North Pacific Ocean during the 2014 Hurricane Season and Relationships to Three Major Hurricanes

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
The 2014 Northeast Pacific hurricane season was highly active, with above-average intensity and frequency events, and a rare landfalling Hawaiian hurricane.

OHC-FOI: An algorithm for Computing the Ocean Heat Content

open access: yes, 2022
Two Matlab algorithms are presented to compute the Ocean Heat Content by the trapezoidal method, using the variable specific heat and density at the ocean surface.

Thermohaline variability of AAIW in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean investigated using an Altimetry Gravest Empirical Mode [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The southeast Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean connects the Atlantic with the Indian Ocean and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, thereby acting as a major conduit within global ocean circulation.

Oceanic Electrical Conductivity Variability From Observations and Its Budget From an Ocean State Estimate

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2022
Because spatio‐temporal variations in ocean heat content (OHC) are strongly predicted by ocean conductivity content (OCC) over most of the global ocean, we analyze the dynamical budget and behavior of the electrical conductivity of seawater.

Optimal surface salinity perturbations of the meridional overturning and heat transport in a global ocean general circulation model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Recent observations and modeling studies have stressed the influence of surface salinity perturbations on the North Atlantic circulation over the past few decades.

Processes controlling upper‐ocean heat content in Drake Passage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A 16 year record of expendable bathythermograph transects across Drake Passage is used to examine variability in upper‐ocean heat content that is not associated with the annual cycle.

Oceanic Advection Controls Mesoscale Mixed Layer Heat Budget and Air-sea Heat Exchange in the Southern Ocean

open access: yes, 2021
We analyze the role of mesoscale heat advection in the Southern Ocean mixed layer (ML) heat budget using a regional high-resolution coupled model, with realistic atmospheric forcing and an idealized ocean component.
