Estimating ocean heat content from the ocean thermal expansion parameters using satellite data [PDF]

open access: yesEarth System Dynamics
Ocean heat content (OHC) is a depth-integrated physical oceanographic variable used to precisely measure ocean warming. Because of the limitations associated with in situ conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) data as well as ocean reanalysis system ...

Large‐Area Flat Optics Color Routing in Tilted Arrays of 2D Semiconductor Nanostripes

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a scalable flat optics platform exploiting self‐organised ion‐beam sputtering and maskless glancing‐angle deposition to fabricate centimetre‐scale arrays of tilted MoS2 nanostripes. The engineered geometry activates Rayleigh anomalies, guided modes, and Mie resonances, enabling highly directional color routing and enhanced light harvesting ...

AMOC Modulates Ocean Heat Content During Deglaciations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
During deglaciations, Earth takes up vast amounts of energy, about half of which heats the global ocean. Thus, ocean heat content (OHC) is a key metric to assess Earth's energy budget. Recent modeling studies suggest that OHC changes not only in response

Observed southern upper-ocean warming over 2005–2014 and associated mechanisms

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2016
The climate system is gaining heat owing to increasing concentration of greenhouse gases due to human activities. As the world’s oceans are the dominant reservoir of heat in the climate system, an accurate estimation of the ocean heat content change is ...

Hybridization of Gap Plasmons and Grating‐Coupled Surface Plasmon Polaritons in Metal Nanoparticle Cluster Arrays on a Mirror

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Here we use a template‐assisted self‐assembly approach of metal colloids onto metal films to produce hybrid plasmonic metasurfaces that integrate nanoparticle‐on‐mirror cavities with periodic metal colloid arrays. The resulting coupling between gap plasmons and grating‐coupled surface plasmon polaritons enables programmable hybrid modes with tailored ...

Recent hemispheric asymmetry in global ocean warming induced by climate change and internal variability

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Observations of global ocean heat content during 2005–2015 have shown a strong hemispheric asymmetry, and the southern hemisphere accounts 92% of the total heat gain.

Ocean heat content in the Iberian–Biscay–Ireland regional seas

open access: yesState of the Planet, 2022
Abstract. The ocean has the largest heat capacity of any single component of the climate system and plays a key dominant role in global heat content changes. To analyse ocean heat content (OHC) variability in the Iberia–Biscay–Ireland (IBI) region, several Copernicus Marine reanalysis and observational products are used together to provide multi ...

Dynamic Fluorescence Modulation via Light‐Driven Competitive Protonation

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
A two‐component molecular system demonstrates reversible, light‐driven fluorescence write–erase cycling and thermal imaging. Illumination of a merocyanine photoacid transfers a proton to a highly efficient fluorescent pyridinium dye, switching its emission color; thermal relaxation reverses the process in the dark.

Effect of El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on Heat Transport in The Indonesia Throughflow Passages and Ocean Heat Content in The Banda Sea

open access: yesIlmu Kelautan
Indonesia Throughflow (ITF) flows water mass from the Northern Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean through Indonesian waters. This research was conducted in the Eastern Indonesia waters in 2009–2019 using Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service ...

Coherent Absorption Reveals Colors Hidden in a Grey Fabry–Pérot Cavity

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
A dielectric thin film shows colors depending on its thickness; this effect can be used to encode information normally accessible through single‐beam spectroscopy. We developed a method to conceal this kind of information, based on coating the dielectric with a matched conductor, that suppresses the color‐bearing thin‐film resonances.
