Pathways and time scales of ocean heat uptake and redistribution in a global ocean-ice model

2020
<p>Changes in regional ocean heat content are not only sensitive to anthropogenic and natural influences, but also substantially impacted by the redistribution of heat, which is in turn driven by changes in ocean circulation and air-sea fluxes. Using a set of numerical simulations with an ocean-sea-ice model of the NEMO framework,

Evolving Relative Importance of the Southern Ocean and North Atlantic in Anthropogenic Ocean Heat Uptake

Journal of Climate, 2018
AbstractOcean uptake of anthropogenic heat over the past 15 years has mostly occurred in the Southern Ocean, based on Argo float observations. This agrees with historical simulations from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5), where the Southern Ocean (south of 30°S) accounts for 72% ± 28% of global heat uptake, while the ...

Mechanisms of ocean heat uptake, transport and storage in ACCESS-OM2

2020
The global ocean plays a dominant role in the net increase of the Earth’s energy inventory observed since the 1970s, storing more than 90% of the additional anthropogenic heat. While subsurface ocean heat gain slows down the warming of the surface atmosphere, it also causes global mean sea level rise through thermal expansion of the ocean’s volume ...

Inferring Ocean Heat Uptake from Satellite Gravimetry and Altimetry

Global ocean heat uptake (OHU) comprises the largest portion of the Earth’s energy imbalance, and estimates of its magnitude and variability vary greatly among observational data products and numerical model simulations. Much of the uncertainty in OHU results from data coverage gaps in sparsely-sampled portions of the ocean (especially the deep ocean).

The sensitivity of ocean heat uptake to numerical mixing in forced and coupled ocean models

The oceans are believed to be responsible for taking up over 90% of the heat retained by anthropogenic greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. For this reason it is important for the ocean component in climate models to have an acceptably realistic representation of the processes that transport heat from the surface into the ocean interior.
