Efficient Optimization of a Regional Water Elevation Model With an Automatically Generated Adjoint

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2023
Calibration of unknown model parameters is a common task in many ocean model applications. We present an adjoint‐based optimization of an unstructured mesh shallow water model for the Baltic Sea.

Cold Atmospheric Plasma‐Activated Decellularized Extracellular Matrix Gel as a Tumor‐Infiltrating Immunoactivation Platform for Post‐Surgical Cancer Immunotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
An injectable cold atmospheric plasma‐activated decellularized tumor extracellular matrix hydrogel is introduced as a post‐surgical immunoactivation platform. The engineered gel attracts residual tumor cells and induces immunogenic cell death, reshaping the tumor microenvironment and eliciting systemic antitumor immunity. In combination with checkpoint

Assessment of alternative strategies for sludge disposal into deep ocean basins off Southern California [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
The general framework of engineering alternatives for regional ocean sludge disposal is well described in a report by Raksit, and will not be repeated here.

High‐Performance Flexible Near‐Infrared Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes with a Heterogeneous Alloy Semitransparent Electrode

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a micro‐structured magnesium‐bismuth alloy electrode that enhances flexible NIR OLEDs. The electrode provides 40% broadband transmittance (400–1600 nm) and boosts light outcoupling efficiency (42.3%) and photoluminescence quantum yield (71.8%) through the Purcell effect in optical microcavities.

Single‐Atom Photocatalyst as Floatable Artificial Leaf for Upcycling Oceanic Plastic Waste

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
To resolve the catastrophic disaster of oceanic plastic pollution, the novel Ru single atom loaded ZnIn2S4 photocatalysts, in the forms of powder or floatable artificial leaf, were prepared for direct conversion of raw polypropylene plastic into valuable chemicals. The optimized catalyst exhibits exceptional performance, with a total formic/acetic acid

Nested ocean models: Work in progress [PDF]

open access: yes
The ongoing work of combining three existing software programs into a nested grid oceanography model is detailed. The HYPER domain decomposition program, the SPEM ocean modeling program, and a quasi-geostrophic model written in England are being combined

Building like a Coral—Parallelized, Multiscale Biofabrication

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Corals build stiff, strong, and inherently circular skeletal materials under resource‐ and energy‐limited conditions—offering blueprints for transformative materials. We synthesize the current understanding of coral biomineralization and reframe coral growth as a multiscale, parallelized biofabrication process.

Deep Ocean Ventilation: A Comparison Between a General Circulation Model and Data‐Constrained Inverse Models

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
Ocean ventilation, or the transfer of tracers from the surface boundary layer into the ocean interior, is a critical process in biogeochemical cycles and the climate system. Here, we assess steady‐state ventilation patterns and timescales in three models
