Numerical study on signatures of atmospheric convective cells in radar images of the ocean

open access: yes, 1999
Current and wind variations at the ocean surface can give rise to a modulation of the sea surface roughness and thus become visible in radar images. The discrimination between radar signatures of oceanic and atmospheric phenomena can be quite difficult ...

An Observation of an Oceanic Front [PDF]

open access: yesTellus, 1957
A detailed temperature section across an oceanic front in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific is described. The frontal zone was moving at about one knot from the colder water toward the warmer water. The temperature difference across the front was 5° F. In the temperature section it is possible to see the cold water overrunning the warm water and creating ...

Monitoring ocean currents during the passage of Typhoon Muifa using optical-fiber distributed acoustic sensing

open access: yesNature Communications
In situ observations under typhoon conditions are sparse and limited. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is an emerging technology that uses submarine optical-fiber (OF) cables to monitor the sea state.

Ethical recommendations for ocean observation

open access: yesAdvances in Geoscience, 2018
. The United Nations proclaimed a decade of marine science for sustainable development (2021–2030) to develop a common framework that will ensure that ocean science can fully support countries in achieving the goal of sustainable development.

Observation and model resolution implications to ocean prediction

open access: yes, 2021
We address ocean modeling capability that has grown exponentially while ocean observation growth has not maintained pace, a situation leading to seemingly degraded forecast skill when model resolution is increased. Skill in predicting ocean instabilities

Advances in Sustainable and Wearable Textile Based Soft Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Review examines advances in wearable textile‐based soft robotics, focusing on sustainable materials, integrated sensing, and scalable actuation. It discusses manufacturing and system integration across healthcare, assistive robotics, prosthetics, and human–machine interfaces, and highlights key challenges in circular design, including life‐cycle ...

Observing the Oceans Acoustically [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
Acoustics play a central role in humankind’s interactions with the ocean and the life within. Passive listening to ocean “soundscapes” informs us about the physical and bio-acoustic environment from earthquakes to communication between fish. Active acoustic probing of the environment informs us about ocean topography, currents and temperature, and ...

Challenges for global ocean observation: the need for increased human capacity

open access: yesJournal of operational oceanography. Publisher: The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology, 2018
Sustained global ocean observations are needed to recognise, understand, and manage changes in marine biodiversity, resources and habitats, and to implement wise conservation and sustainable development strategies.

Photothermal‐Activated Antibacterial Amyloid‐Polyphenol‐Iron Hydrogels for Synergistic Wound Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We report a thermally triggered supramolecular hydrogel (LTFe) formed by Fe3+ and tannic acid on lysozyme amyloid fibrils. Fe3+ enables rapid gelation and photothermal transduction with an efficiency of 88.56%. The LTFe hydrogel exhibits excellent biocompatibility, potent antibacterial activity against E. coli and S.

On the Observability of Oceanic Gyres [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 2014
AbstractThis study examines the observability of a stratified ocean in a square flat basin on a midlatitude beta plane. Here, “observability” means the ability to establish, in a finite interval of time, the time-dependent ocean state given density observations over the same interval and with no regard for errors.
