An acoustic view of ocean mixing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Knowledge of the parameter K (turbulent diffusivity/"mixing intensity") is a key to understand transport processes of matter and energy in the ocean. Especially the almost vertical component of K across the ocean stratification (diapycnal diffusivity ...

Metal–Organic Frameworks for Gaseous Pollutant Management: From Capture to Neutralization and Reutilization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review maps how MOFs can manage hazardous gases by combining adsorption, neutralization, and reutilization, enabling sustainable air‐pollution control. Covering chemical warfare agent simulants, SO2, NOx, NH3, H2S, and volatile organic compounds, it highlights structure‐guided strategies that boost selectivity, water tolerance, and cycling ...

Off-bottom turbulence expansions of unbounded flow over a deep-ocean ridge

open access: yesTellus: Series A, Dynamic Meteorology and Oceanography, 2019
Internal wave breaking upon sloping seafloors is a potential source of turbulent mixing in the deep-ocean, but we lack details on off-bottom breaking. Turbulence processes are relevant for the dispersal away from the seafloor of suspended materials like ...

Model-Observations Synergy in the Coastal Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
Integration of observations of the coastal ocean continuum, from regional oceans to shelf seas and estuaries/deltas with models, can substantially increase the value of observations and enable a wealth of applications.

Fluorescent Polymeric Nanofibers as Ratiometric Multiplexed Skin Sensors of pH and Oxygen

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Fluorescent polymeric nanofibers and nanorods are produced as ratiometric sensors of two important physiological parameters: pH and oxygen. They operate by dual Forster resonance energy transfer from large number of energy donor dyes to limited number of two distinct energy acceptors, enabling simultaneous sensing of pH and oxygen.

Observing global ocean topostrophy [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2008
Recent publications have evaluated topostrophy, τ ≡ f × V · ∇D where is f Coriolis, V is velocity, and ∇D is gradient of total depth, as a means of comparing models' circulations. Some results are striking. Comparing four global models, two with modest grid size and two with fine grids, Merryfield and Scott (2007) show that finer grid models are ...

Evaluation of the Dual Impact of Nanotechnologies on Health and Environment Through Alternative Bridging Models

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review explores how alternative invertebrate and small‐vertebrate models advance the evaluation of nanomaterials across medicine and environmental science. By bridging cellular and organismal levels, these models enable integrated assessment of toxicity, biodistribution, and therapeutic performance.

The reinvigoration of the Southern Ocean carbon sink [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Several studies have suggested that the carbon sink in the Southern Ocean—the ocean’s strongest region for the uptake of anthropogenic CO2 —has weakened in recent decades.

Light‐Driven Reconfigurable Logic in a Monolithic Perovskite Device via Nonlinear Photoresponse Switching

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates a monolithic perovskite OELG device that performs all eight logic operations, including XOR and XNOR, without external bias. Enabled by trap‐engineered MAPbI3:PLL and dual photogates, it achieves reconfigurable logic and parallel decoding of amplitude–frequency signals, supporting scenario‐configured logic‐level separation for ...

Ocean acidification in Canada: the current state of knowledge and pathways for action

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Ocean acidification (OA) generally receives far less consideration than other climate stressors and related hazards, such as global warming and extreme weather events.
