Bistatic Radar Systems at Large Baselines for Ocean Observation

The capabilities of bistatic radar observations to estimate the wind field over the ocean are investigated in this paper. The work is based on the analysis of simulated data obtained through a well-established electromagnetic model, which accounts for the anisotropy of the ocean’s spectrum and of second-order effects of the scattering phenomenon.

Ocean Observing systems consist of in-situ and satellite based technique to detect, track, and predict changes in physical, chemical, geological and biological processes. In-situ observing systems have both Eulerian (based on fixed locations) and Lagrangian (whose location varies with time) systems.

The authors describe a compact, easily deployed, moored system for oceanographic and meteorological observations in the coastal ocean. The system consists of a surface and subsurface mooring pair deployed adjacent to one another. Compared to a single catenary surface mooring, this arrangement allows the entire water column to be instrumented.
