Wake sorting, selective predation and biogenic mixing: potential reasons for high turbulence in fish schools [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2013
There has been debate about animals’ contribution to ocean circulation, called biomixing, or biogenic mixing. The energy input of schooling fish is significant but the eddies may be too small; so energy is dissipated as heat before impacting oceanic ...

Partially Coherent Off-Axis Double Vortex Beam and Its Properties in Oceanic Turbulence

open access: yes, 2023
A partially coherent off-axis double vortex beam (PCOADVB) composed of two off-axis vortices is theoretically presented. The analytical equations of a PCOADVB in oceanic turbulence are presented, and the intensity profiles and the number of coherence ...

Seismic Sequence Stratigraphy Applied to Reservoir Recognition and Evolution on Marine Carbonatic Ramp—Macaé Group (Albian to Cenomanian) of Campos Basin

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
A classic oil producing interval of the Campos Basin—Macaé Group is revisited through seismic stratigraphic analysis, providing a stratigraphic framework, characteristic depositional and relative time positioning for several complex structural settings.

Decadal Changes of UV Aerosol Optical Depth in Hobart, Australia Measured With a Brewer MKIII: Relationship to Bushfire Events and Climate Indices

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Monthly average aerosol optical depth at 320 nm obtained with a Brewer MKIII spectrophotometer for Hobart, Australia (42.8806° S, 147.3250° E) over a 21‐year period. There is a linear trend of 15.4% per decade. There are 9 months when the average aerosol optical depth exceeds twice the monthly standard deviation.

Estimating Oceanic Turbulence Dissipation from Seismic Images [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Seismic images of oceanic thermohaline finestructure record vertical displacements from internal waves and turbulence over large sections at unprecedented horizontal resolution.Where reflections followisopycnals, their displacements can be used to ...

Tropicalization of the Temperate Zone: Spatiotemporal Variability of Winter Warming and Declining Freeze Days Across the United States

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Unique characteristics of winter daily minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) temperatures and freeze days across the conterminous United States from 1952 to 2024 are examined. Results show spatial heterogeneity in Tmin/Tmax warming rates across the tropical‐temperate transition zone in the southeastern United States, and that the highest temperature on the

Simulation of transmission characteristics of oceanic wireless optical communication systems based on orbital angular momentum multiplexing with space-time coding

open access: yesTongxin xuebao, 2020
In order to mitigate the crosstalk caused by oceanic turbulence in the underwater wireless orbital angular momentum multiplexing optical communication system, the application of space-time coding technology in the system was studied.Based on Rytov ...

The influence of current meteorological phenomena on flight processes [PDF]

open access: yesINCAS Bulletin
This paper presents atmospheric turbulence as an intrinsic hazard to aircraft flight dynamics, particularly when flying over large oceanic expanses bodies of water such as the Pacific Ocean.

Microstructure measurements and estimates of entrainment in the Denmark Strait overflow plume [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
To examine processes controlling the entrainment of ambient water into the Denmark Strait overflow (DSO) plume/gravity current, measurements of turbulent dissipation rate were carried out by a quasi-free-falling (tethered) microstructure profiler (MSP ...
