Opposite companion effect on flight initiation distance in sympatric species: plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) and white-rumped snowfinch (Montifringilla taczanowskii) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
There are many factors influencing prey’s risk perception and escape decision during predator-prey encounters. The distance at which animals move away from perceived danger (often quantified as flight initiation distance [FID]) has been used by ...

Evidence of Intraspecific Adaptive Variation in the American Pika (Ochotona princeps) on a Continental Scale Using a Target Enrichment and Mitochondrial Genome Skimming Approach

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 20, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Montane landscapes present an array of abiotic challenges that drive adaptive evolution amongst organisms. These adaptations can promote habitat specialisation, which may heighten the risk of extirpation from environmental change. For example, higher metabolic rates in an endothermic species may contribute to heightened cold tolerance, whilst ...

Herbivorous mammals adjust their feeding patterns according to the abundance of available diet to adapt to the effects of grassland degradation

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
The degradation of grasslands on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau has severely impacted the region’s ecology and productivity, subsequently affecting the dietary niche of the region’s herbivores.

Parasite Species Associated With Wild Plateau Pika (Ochotona Curzoniae) In Southeastern Qinghai Province, China [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A survey was conducted to determine the prevalence and seasonal abundance of egg, larval, and adult stages of helminths; oocyts of protozoans; and ectoparasites of plateau pikas (Ochotona curzoniae) in seven areas of southeastern Qinghai Province, China,

Preference for ground cover when selecting burrow entrances in plateau pikas

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Burrow‐dwelling animals such as the plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) often seek sturdy entrances for their burrows, which can reduce the need for frequent maintenance.

Dietary Differentiation Mitigates Interspecific Interference Competition Between Sympatric Pallas’s Cats (Otocolobus manul) and Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes)

open access: yesAnimals
The comparative analysis of the feeding ecology among sympatric small carnivores reveals both differentiation and overlap in resource utilization patterns, which serves as a critical pathway for understanding interspecific interactions and maintaining ...
