Geologically calibrated mammalian tree and its correlation with global events, including the emergence of humans

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 12, December 2023., 2023
A robust minimum age tree shows post K–Pg Placentalia radiation, and subsequent extensive radiation connected to exponentially increased base substitution (mutation) rate including generation of Homo sapiens. This Neogene radiation may have been triggered by expansion of C4 grasses that decreased atmospheric CO2, resulting in global cooling and ...

Parasitic infections of wild rabbits and hares [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinarski Glasnik, 2014
The paper presents the most important parasitic infections of wild rabbits and hares, which harmful effect in this animal population is manifested as a gradual weakening of the immune system, reduction in fertility, weight loss and constant ...

Gene flow drives genomic diversity in Asian Pikas distributed along the core and range‐edge habitats in the Himalayas

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 5, May 2023., 2023
Our results provide evidence of reduced genetic diversity in Asian pikas distributed across the Himalayas and the neighboring regions and indicate that recurrent gene flow is possibly a key mechanism for maintaining genetic diversity and adaptive potential in these pikas.

Ancient introgression underlying the unusual mito‐nuclear discordance and coat phenotypic variation in the Moupin pika

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 28, Issue 12, Page 2593-2609, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Aim The mechanisms by which global biodiversity hotspots harbour and conserve high genetic and morphological diversity of endemic species remain unexplored. Relic species of ochotonids in the genus Ochotona are confined to alpine habitats and highly sensitive to environmental changes. We studied the genomic and ecological mechanisms underlying

The identification of pika and hare through tricho-taxonomy (Mammalia: Lagomorpha)

open access: yesJournal of Threatened Taxa, 2019
The macroscopic and microscopic characters of dorsal guard hairs of Indian lagomorphs (four species of pikas and three species of hare) are described; the cuticular and medullary characters are similar between the species studied.

Comparative morphology of premolar foramen in lagomorphs (Mammalia: Glires) and its functional and phylogenetic implications. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Lagomorphs (a group that consists of pikas, hares, rabbits and allies) are notable for their conservative morphology retained for most of their over 50 million years evolutionary history.

Novel Epidemiologic Features of High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza Virus A H5N1 2.3.3.4b Panzootic: A Review. [PDF]

open access: yesTransbound Emerg Dis
Avian influenza is one of the most devastating avian diseases. The current high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) A virus H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b epizootic began in the 2020–2021 season, and has caused a panzootic, considered one of the worst ever reported.

The Late Middle Pleistocene mammalian fauna of Oumm Qatafa Cave, Judean Desert: taxonomy, taphonomy and palaeoenvironment

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, Volume 37, Issue 4, Page 612-638, May 2022., 2022
ABSTRACT The Middle Pleistocene archaeological record of the southern Levant has proven key to understanding human evolution and intercontinental faunal biogeography. Knowledge of archaeological sites of that period in the southern Levant is biased, with most Middle Pleistocene localities in the Mediterranean areas in the north, despite the mosaic of ...

Anatomy of the Nasal and Auditory Regions of the Fossil Lagomorph Palaeolagus haydeni: Systematic and Evolutionary Implications

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2021
Palaeolagus, a late Eocene to early Miocene North American lagomorph genus, represented by numerous and well-preserved specimens, has been long considered a basal leporid, although it is currently understood as a stem lagomorph.
