Diving into Diversity: Copepod Crustaceans in Octocoral Associations

open access: yesDiversity, 2023
This research provides an extensive analysis of the biodiversity and distribution patterns of copepod crustaceans associated with octocoral species. A comprehensive dataset comprising 966 records pertaining to 233 copepod species, encompassing 54 genera,

Characteristics of Carbonates of Gorgonian Axes (Coelenterata, Octocorallia)

open access: yesThe Biological Bulletin, 1992
Axial skeletons of 13 species of gorgonians were examined by SEM, X-ray diffraction, and polarizing microscopy. Calcite, though occasionally amorphous is the major biogenic carbonate of axes. Non-biogenic mineralization may be calcitic, amorphous, or aragonitic.

Exploring Mesophotic Coral Reef Boundaries Using Environmental DNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 4, July‐August 2026.
Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding reveals boundaries along depth gradients in shallow and mesophotic coral reefs. Analysis of metazoan amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) uncovers changes in community structure from shallow to deep reefs, highlighting a localized eDNA footprint and its potential for monitoring mesophotic and deep‐sea habitats ...

Phylogenetics, systematics and biogeography of deep-sea Pennatulacea (Anthozoa: Octocorallia): evidence from molecules and morphology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Despite its extreme environmental conditions, the deep sea harbours a unique andspecies-rich fauna of mostly unknown age and phylogeny. Pennatulids (Anthozoa:Octocorallia) are a group whose taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships remain poorlyknown and ...

Four New Records of Dendronephthya Species (Octocorallia: Alcyonacea: Nephtheidae) from Korea [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity, 2013
Soft corals were collected from the subtidal zone in the coastal regions of Jejudo Island between 1975 and 2010. By the taxonomic work on them, three species in the subgenus Dendronephthya (Dendronephthya) and one species in the subgenus Dendronephthya ...

Two new species of Waiparaconus (Octocorallia) of the enigmatic Family Waiparaconidae

open access: yesPapers in Palaeontology, Volume 12, Issue 4, July/August 2026.
Abstract Waiparaconus, a Late Cretaceous to early Cenozoic fossil, was long interpreted as a pedunculate cirripede, but is now tentatively placed in the Pennatuloidea (Order Scleralcyonacea, Class Octocorallia). New material from the Snow Hill Island Formation (lower Maastrichtian) at Vega Island, Antarctica is described and specimens from the Gingin ...
