Quantifying the density of mangrove crabs: Ocypodidae and Grapsidae
Marine Biology, 2002Numerous studies have highlighted the importance of crabs within mangrove ecosystems, but tested methods of enumeration are virtually non-existent. The aim of the present study was to assess the accuracy of quick, non-invasive methods for estimating the population density of three species of mangrove crabs in East Africa: Uca annulipes, Sesarma ...

Mating behaviour of Macrophthalmus hirtipes (Brachyura: Ocypodidae)
Marine Biology, 2000We examined the mating behaviour of the New Zealand ocypodid crab Macrophthalmus hirtipes in the laboratory between February and June 1998. This species has a discrete breeding season. Mating and moulting were not linked and only intermoult females with mobile gonopore opercula were attractive to males.

Aspects of the Australasian zoogeography of the Macrophthalminae (Brachyura, Ocypodidae)
Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London, 1968The Australasian species of Macrophthalmus show close zoogeographical relationships with those of ‘South‐East Asia’, and to a lesser extent with those of ‘Japan’, relatively little relationships with those of the ‘Pacific’, very few with ‘Indian’ species and none with ‘African’ species. In terms of the coefficient of faunistic similarity used, the only

Allometric Growth in Ilyoplax Stevensi (Decapoda, Brachyura, Ocypodidae)

Mound building in Ilyoplax pingi (Crustacea: Brachyura: Ocypodidae)
Marine Biology, 1994The ocypodid crab Ilyoplax pingi, observed in Kanghwa I., Korea in 1992, builds a mound at the burrow entrance, by piling mud dug out from the burrow. The mounds were made by both waving and non-waving males, and by both ovigerous and non-ovigerous females.

Acoustic Signalling and Detection by Semiterrestrial Crabs of the Family Ocypodidae
1972The burrow-dwelling, semiterrestrial crabs of the family Ocypodidae have radiated to occupy many different types of habitats from the tropics to the temperate regions. In some species, individuals may be relatively isolated from one another, while other species live in dense colonies with adjacent burrows separated by a few inches. The group displays a

Relative Carapace and Chela Proportions in Some Ocypodid Crabs (Brachyura, Ocypodidae)
