Glycoproteins histochemistry of the gills of Odontesthes bonariensis (Teleostei, Atherinopsidae)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, 2010
The histochemistry of glycoproteins (GP) in the mucous cells of the gills of the silverside Odontesthes bonariensis was identified with: (1) oxidizable vicinal diols; (2) sialic acid and some of their chain variants, carbon 7 (7C), carbon 8 (8C) or carbon 9 (9C); (3) sialic acid residues without O‐acyl substitution and with O‐acyl substitution at 7C ...

Transgenerational Heat Exposure Triggers Unexpected Compensatory Sex Ratio Responses in a Temperature‐Sensitive Fish Under Climate Warming

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 3, March 2026.
Rising temperatures can unbalance the number of males and females in species whose sex is influenced by the environment. In a decade‐long experiment with European sea bass, we found that heat during development produces more males, but the thermal history of parents—especially fathers—can unexpectedly push offspring sex ratios back in the opposite ...

Early Nutritional Programing: Unlocking the Potential of Fish for Sustainable Aquaculture

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Nutritional programing, which explores the link between early nutritional conditions and their long‐term effects on animals, is a developing field within fish biology. Suboptimal nutritional status during early life is strongly associated with a higher risk of metabolic consequences later in life, including permanent growth retardation, impaired neural

Otolith and vertebral morphology of marine atherinid species (Atheriniformes, Atherinopsidae) coexisting in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean

open access: yesCiencias Marinas, 2010
Studies on marine ecosystems rely on the identification of fish prey species of piscivores (fish, aquatic mammals, and aquatic birds) based on their bones and otoliths. The stomach contents of piscivores show predation on marine atherinids of commercial

Lactobacillus‐Derived Biosurfactants: Emulsification and Antioxidant Properties in Oil Emulsions

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 6, June 2025.
Extracted biosurfactants from lactobacilli present in traditional yogurt had emulsifying performance in emulsions. Oxidation levels indicated that the emulsions prepared with biosurfactants were significantly less oxidized compared to the control sample. This research introduces the biosurfactants derived from L. plantarum and L.

Specific testicular morphology in the atherinomorphOdontesthes nigricans(Richardson, 1848): a comparison with the sympatric speciesOdontesthes smitti(Lahille, 1929)

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ichthyology, 2009
In teleosts, testis organization can be classified in different morphological categories (Grier, 1993; Grier and Parenti, 1994). While primitive osteichthyans show anastomosed tubular testes, the derived teleost species (sensu Parenti and Grier, 2004) present one of two principal morphologies according to the type of distribution of spermatogonia ...
