The role of amides in seminal cryopreservation of wild silverside, Odontesthes bonariensis

Cryobiology, 2016
Amides were tested as internal cryoprotectants for the preservation of wild silverside (Odontesthes bonariensis) sperm. The semen was diluted in modified Mounib's medium and cryopreserved by adding 2, 5, 8 or 11% of dimethyl acetamide (DMA), dimethyl formamide (DMF) or methyl formamide (MF).

Androgen synthesis in the silverside Odontesthes bonariensis

2008
Though it is generally accepted that steroids are able to affect the sex ratio in many teleost species, the role of androgens in the sex determination/differentiation process in fish species with temperature-dependent sex determination systems (TSD) has not been established.

Sex differentiation and hormonal feminization in pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis

Aquaculture, 1996
Abstract An investigation was conducted on the histological process of gonadal sex differentiation and the suitability of steroid hormone administration for sex control in pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis . Light histological examination of the gonads of larvae and juvenile fish revealed that the primordial gonads were already formed at hatching ...

Seasonal changes and endocrine regulation of pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) oogenesis in the wild

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Molecular & Integrative Physiology, 2014
The goal of this study was to evaluate the essential components controlling the brain-pituitary-gonad axis during pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) oogenesis in the wild. Ovarian developmental stages from vitellogenesis up to ovulation were associated with increasing day length and water temperatures below 21°C (winter and beginning of spring ...

Effects of Hypoxia on the Reproductive Endocrine Axis of the Pejerrey (Odontesthes Bonariensis)

Fish Physiology and Biochemistry
Recently, hypoxic areas have been identified in water bodies of the Pampas region due to human activity. The objective of this work was to study the effect of low concentrations of dissolved oxygen (hypoxia) on the reproductive endocrine axis of a pampas fish (Odontesthes bonariensis). Groups of 8 males and 8 females were subjected to severe hypoxia (2-

Atrazine alters early sexual development of the South American silverside, Odontesthes bonariensis

Aquatic Toxicology, 2023
Atrazine (ATZ) is a frequent contaminant in freshwater ecosystems within agricultural regions. The capacity of this herbicide to interfere with the vertebrate endocrine system is broadly recognized, but the mechanisms and responses usually differ among species. In this study, ATZ effects on hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis key genes expression

Pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis

2017
Pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis was reared in the recirculation system for 1 year. The system consisted of two particle-trap equipped octagonal tanks (0.75 m3) for the rapid collection of feces and uneaten feed, a mechanical filter, a UV unit, a biological filter which provided nitrification, and a hollow-fiber oxygen injection system.

Benzocaine and clove oil as anesthetics for pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) fingerlings [PDF]

open access: yesArquivo Brasileiro De Medicina Veterinaria E Zootecnia, 2013
Pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) is a native species from Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguay and Argentina where it is of great economic importance for artisanal fishing. One difficulty in laboratory research with pejerrey is related to its sensitivity, as it presents higher basal cortisol levels than other freshwater species.

Cooling of pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis (Teleostei, Atherinidae) embryos at sub-zero temperatures

Theriogenology, 2020
Pejerrey fish (Odontesthes bonariensis) is a seasonal multiple spawner with great economic importance and an adequate species for Aquaculture. For these reasons, it is necessary to apply biotechnologies to optimize its reproduction in captivity. In this context, the aim of this work was to develop a cooling protocol for pejerrey embryos at sub-zero ...

Dmrt1 expression analysis during spermatogenesis in pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis

Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, 2006
Dmrt1, a putative transcription factor with a DM-binding motif (called the DM domain), is generally considered to be exclusively expressed in testicular tissue, except in some teleost species where it has also been demonstrated to be expressed at the ovary.
