Low coverage whole‐genome sequencing of 48 females and 55 males and a genome‐wide association study revealed two regions on chromosomes 8 and 21 associated with sex.

International Journal of Evolutionary Biology, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014 Sex chromosomes bearing the sex‐determining gene initiate development along the male or female pathway, no matter which sex is determined by XY male or ZW female heterogamety. Sex chromosomes originate from ancient autosomes but evolved rapidly after the acquisition of sex‐determining factors which are highly divergent between species.
