Large cystic lesions of the maxillary sinus may initially manifest with malocclusion, cosmetic deformity, or both. Their origin may be odontogenic or nonodontogenic. Proper diagnosis of these cysts immeasurably aids in adequate (nonmutilating) treatment.

Abstract. The paper reports on two new cases of calcifying odontogenic cysts, and gives a survey of 50 cases reported in the literature. In one case the ultrastructure of the characteristic ghost cells was examined. Most of the cells were anuclear or contained pyknotic nuclei.

A 61-year-old white woman had a radiolucent lesion in the anterior portion of the mandible which was diagnosed as a keratinizing and calcifying odontogenic cyst. As it has a radiographic appearance similar to other pathologic processes, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis when a radiolucent-radiopaque lesion is encountered.

Four types of cells in the keratinizing and calcifying odontogenic cyst can be identified. The "basal cell" and "stellate reticulum-type cell" contained various amounts of tonofilaments and organelles. The "ghost cell" contained coarse bundles of tonofilaments intermingled with dilated membranous organelles.
