Odontoid compression of the brainstem without basilar impression – “ odontoid invagination”

Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2005
We report five patients with odontoid invagination, in which the odontoid process bulges upward into the foramen magnum and compresses the brainstem without deformity of the occipital bone. Two patients had a craniovertebral abnormality associated with Chiari malformation without instability of the craniovertebral junction (stable odontoid invagination)

Odontoid Fractures Treated by Anterior Odontoid Screw Fixation

Spine, 1991
While odontoid fractures are common injuries, disagreement exists regarding treatment. Some authors claim a high rate of pseudoarthrosis and have therefore recommended early posterior fixation and fusion. This, however, results in decreased cervical rotation.

Odontoid Fractures in the Elderly

Journal of Spinal Disorders, 1993
A review of 35 patients > 60 years of age with odontoid fractures showed that a type II injury (Anderson and D'Alonso) was the most common fracture pattern (82% of cases). On the basis of mechanism of injury and sex incidence, we deduced that osteopenia is a contributory factor in the occurrence of odontoid fractures.

Osteoblastoma of the Odontoid Process

Pediatric Neurosurgery, 1994
A case of an osteoblastoma located in the odontoid process in a 7 year-old boy who presented with torticollis is reported. CT scan and MRI disclosed the lesion, but diagnosis was established by a CT-guided needle biopsy. Surgery through a transoral approach allowed total excision of the tumor.

Odontoid Fusion

2019
Anterior odontoid screw fixation allows for the internal fixation of unstable odontoid fractures with low morbidity, good fusion rates, and preservation of the atlanto-axial range of motion when applied in appropriate clinical cases. Advances in surgical techniques have allowed for safer, more minimally invasive approaches that reduce the risk of ...

Acute Odontoid Fractures: Anterior Odontoid Fixation

Operative Techniques in Orthopaedics, 2007
Fractures of the dens are common injuries. The classification of these fractures remains controversial. Anterior odontoid fixation is a safe and effective means of stabilizing some of these injuries. We review classification of these injuries, treatment options, and surgical indications. Anterior odontoid fixation is reviewed in further detail, with an

Pathomechanisms of Failures of the Odontoid

Spine, 2000
A finite element investigation to determine the causal mechanisms that lead to odontoid fracture. To elucidate which loading scenarios, including rotational moments, compression-tension, and lateral and anteroposterior shear, can result in Type I, Type II, and Type III odontoid failures. There is considerable controversy about the major loading path that
