Abstract Twenty-two patients with C-2 fractures involving the odontoid process were treated by immobilization in a halo device. Six had associated spinal cord injury (1 complete and 5 incomplete), and 16 had no spinal cord injury. The age of the patients ranged from 20 to 86 years, with a mean age of 53.

Therefore, surgical treatment is preferred, and the Magerl-Böhler anterior osteosynthesis of the C2 dens is one of the options for achieving good bony union.

Displaced Fracture in a Hemangiomatous Odontoid
Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques, 1997Vertebral hemangioma is a common and usually benign lesion encountered on routine radiographic studies. We report the unusual case of a woman who sustained a displaced fracture of a hemangiomatous odontoid after minimal trauma. Good healing was accomplished with external halo bracing alone.

Odontoid Fractures Treated by Anterior Odontoid Screw Fixation
Spine, 1991While odontoid fractures are common injuries, disagreement exists regarding treatment. Some authors claim a high rate of pseudoarthrosis and have therefore recommended early posterior fixation and fusion. This, however, results in decreased cervical rotation.

Odontoid fractures in elderly patients
Journal of Neurosurgery, 1993✓ This retrospective analysis describes the clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcome of 19 patients aged 80 years or older with odontoid fractures. The fractures were due to falls in 15 patients (78.9%) and were associated with motor-vehicle accidents in four. Type III fractures were seen in three patients and type II fractures in 16.
