Biomechanical Assessment of Fracture Loads and Patterns of the Odontoid Process [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
STUDY DESIGN: Laboratory study.OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the biomechanical competence and fracture characteristics of the odontoid process.SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Odontoid fractures of the second cervical vertebra (C2) represent the ...

Comparison of Two Posterior Minimally Invasive Approaches for Odontoid Fractures: Midline Nuchal Ligament Approach vs. Paramedian Muscle‐Splitting Approach

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 18, Issue 1, Page 74-83, January 2026.
The midline nuchal ligament approach yields clinical outcomes similar to those of the paramedian muscle‐splitting technique for odontoid fractures, while offering a more stable surgical procedure and reducing iatrogenic injury to the cervical posterior muscles and the greater occipital nerve.

Combined Type II Odontoid Fracture with Jefferson's Fracture Treated with Temporary Internal Fixation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
An 18-year-old male presented after a motor vehicle rollover accident. Computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed the diagnosis of Type II odontoid fracture.

Plough Fracture (Anterior Arch Fracture Type Traumatic Posterior Atlantoaxial Dislocation, TPAD‐AOT Type III): A Retrospective Study of Nine Clinical Cases With Complete Imaging Data

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Fracture of the anterior arch of the atlas, accompanied by posterior atlantoaxial dislocation, typically presents on CT imaging as the odontoid process penetrating through and causing a high‐energy shear fracture of the anterior arch. This injury may occur with or without retained fracture fragments.

The epidemiology of odontoid fractures : a study from the Swedish fracture register [PDF]

open access: yes
Purpose The objective of this study is to characterize the occurrence of odontoid fractures within a Swedish population. Methods Prospective data of adults diagnosed with an odontoid fracture between 2015 and 2021 were retrieved from the Swedish Fracture

Quantitative 3-dimensional Computed Tomography (Q3DCT) analysis of odontoid fractures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The primary aim of this paper is to introduce Quantitative 3-dimensional Computed Tomography (Q3DCT) for odontoid fractures to assess if fracture characteristics differ between the Anderson and d'Alonso subclasses. Secondarily, we assessed if high energy

Posterior transodontoid fixation: A new fixation (Kotil) technique

open access: yesJournal of Craniovertebral Junction and Spine, 2011
Anterior odontoid screw fixation or posterior C1-2 fusion techniques are routinely used in the treatment of Type II odontoid fractures, but these techniques may be inadequate in some types of odontoid fractures.

Early life functional transitions impact craniofacial morphology in osteogenesis imperfecta

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 308, Issue 12, Page 3157-3174, December 2025.
Abstract Early life behaviors have a profound role in shaping adult craniofacial morphology. During early life, all mammals undergo the dynamic transition from suckling to mastication, a period coinciding with rapid cranial biomineralization. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a genetic disorder that impacts the production of type I collagen, disrupts ...

Combined double fracture of the odontoid process and fracture of the atlas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We report a rare case of double fractures of the odontoid process combined with a fracture of the anterior arch of the atlas. Combined fractures of the odontoid process and the upper cervical spine are not unusual.

Traumatic odontoid process synchondrosis fracture with atlantoaxial instability in a calf: clinical presentation and imaging findings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A 6-week-old female Simmental calf was evaluated for acute non-ambulatory tetraparesis. Physical and laboratory examinations revealed no clinically relevant abnormalities. Neurological findings were consistent with acute, progressive and painful cervical
