Unstable odontoid fracture: Surgical strategy in a 22-case series, and literature review
SummarySurgical treatment of unstable odontoid fracture (type II OBAR or HTAL) has progressed, with a range of techniques, the specificities of which need to be known so as to determine their respective roles in the therapeutic arsenal now available.

Odontoid fractures remain the most common C2 fracture and of those individuals older than 65 years. The type of optimal management remains in question given comorbidities, risk of nonunion, and limitations in mobility when surgical fusion is the treatment selected.

Odontoid Fracture Biomechanics
Spine, 2014In vitro biomechanical study. To investigate mechanisms of odontoid fracture.Odontoid fractures in younger adults occur most often due to high-energy trauma including motor vehicle crashes and in older adults due to fall from standing height.Horizontally aligned head impacts into a padded barrier were simulated using a human upper cervical spine ...

Neurosurgery, 1981
Abstract Twenty-two patients with C-2 fractures involving the odontoid process were treated by immobilization in a halo device. Six had associated spinal cord injury (1 complete and 5 incomplete), and 16 had no spinal cord injury. The age of the patients ranged from 20 to 86 years, with a mean age of 53.

Anterior Osteosynthesis of Odontoid Fractures
Acta chirurgiae orthopaedicae et traumatologiae Cechoslovaca, 2008PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The conservative treatment of an odontoid fracture with immobilization in a halo-vest or collar often results in pseudoarthrosis. Therefore, surgical treatment is preferred, and the Magerl-Böhler anterior osteosynthesis of the C2 dens is one of the options for achieving good bony union.

Displaced Fracture in a Hemangiomatous Odontoid
Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques, 1997Vertebral hemangioma is a common and usually benign lesion encountered on routine radiographic studies. We report the unusual case of a woman who sustained a displaced fracture of a hemangiomatous odontoid after minimal trauma. Good healing was accomplished with external halo bracing alone.

Choice of treatment of odontoid fractures
Journal of Neurosurgery, 1982✓ This paper presents a discussion of the diagnosis and treatment of odontoid fractures, based upon the authors' experience with this entity over the last 10 years. Conservative therapy and surgical fusion are compared with respect to efficacy and duration of hospitalization.

Odontoid Fractures Treated by Anterior Odontoid Screw Fixation
Spine, 1991While odontoid fractures are common injuries, disagreement exists regarding treatment. Some authors claim a high rate of pseudoarthrosis and have therefore recommended early posterior fixation and fusion. This, however, results in decreased cervical rotation.
