Plough Fracture (Anterior Arch Fracture Type Traumatic Posterior Atlantoaxial Dislocation, TPAD‐AOT Type III): A Retrospective Study of Nine Clinical Cases With Complete Imaging Data

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Fracture of the anterior arch of the atlas, accompanied by posterior atlantoaxial dislocation, typically presents on CT imaging as the odontoid process penetrating through and causing a high‐energy shear fracture of the anterior arch. This injury may occur with or without retained fracture fragments.

Posterior transodontoid fixation: A new fixation (Kotil) technique

open access: yesJournal of Craniovertebral Junction and Spine, 2011
Anterior odontoid screw fixation or posterior C1-2 fusion techniques are routinely used in the treatment of Type II odontoid fractures, but these techniques may be inadequate in some types of odontoid fractures.

Early life functional transitions impact craniofacial morphology in osteogenesis imperfecta

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 308, Issue 12, Page 3157-3174, December 2025.
Abstract Early life behaviors have a profound role in shaping adult craniofacial morphology. During early life, all mammals undergo the dynamic transition from suckling to mastication, a period coinciding with rapid cranial biomineralization. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a genetic disorder that impacts the production of type I collagen, disrupts ...

Combined Type II Odontoid Fracture With Axis Anterior Arch Fracture

open access: yesGeriatric Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation, 2015
Associated fractures of the atlas and axis are frequent, particularly in the elderly patients following a simple low-energy fall. This injury can be easily misdiagnosed on initial plain radiographs, and therefore computed tomography scan is a useful ...

Design of a Novel Artificial Atlanto‐Odontoid Joint and Its Anatomical and Radiological Studies Following Transoral Pharyngeal Approach Arthroplasty

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 17, Issue 9, Page 2670-2679, September 2025.
The implantation of the novel artificial atlanto‐odontoid joint (AAOJ) is both safe and convenient, and it preserves the normal range of rotational, flexion‐extension, and lateral bending motion between the atlas and axis. ABSTRACT Objective For atlantoaxial joint disorders, traditional surgical approaches often presented challenges such as significant

How to Apply the Sequential Correction Technique to Treatment of Congenital Cervicothoracic Scoliosis: A Technical Note and Case Series

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 17, Issue 7, Page 2159-2172, July 2025.
Sequential Correction Technique for Congenital Cervicothoracic Scoliosis. A novel multi‐rod construct technique offering effective deformity correction, enhanced symmetry, and robust fixation stability. ABSTRACT Objective Hemivertebrae in the cervicothoracic junction in the pediatric population are treated conventionally with a two‐rod instrumentation ...

Odontoid fractures: Management

open access: yesJournal of Spinal Surgery, 2014
Odontoid fractures account for approximately 20% of all cervical fractures, majority of them being type II. Treatment of odontoid fractures is determined by multiple factors, including fracture type, presence of associated injuries, patient's age and ...

Evaluation of the influence of atlantoaxial transverse ligament on stability of atlantoaxial complex fracture using 3D finite element method

open access: yesZhongguo linchuang yanjiu
Objective To analyze and compare the effects of transverse ligament injury on the stability and stress distribution of atlantoaxial complex fractures using 3D finite element method. Methods A male volunteer with a normal cervical spine was selected.

Odontoid process fractures: the role of the ligaments in maintaining stability. A biomechanical, cadaveric study

open access: yesSICOT-J, 2015
Aims: We wished to investigate the role of the cervical ligaments in maintaining atlantoaxial stability after fracture of the odontoid process. Methods: We dissected eight fresh-frozen cadaveric cervical spines to prepare the C1 and C2 ...
