Odor Index: An Integration of Odor Parameters for Swine Slurry Odors
Transactions of the ASABE, 2010In the animal production industry, manure odors can be a potential nuisance to neighboring residents. A more suitable metric other than odor concentration and intensity is required to evaluate odor dispersion or to evaluate on-farm odor-reducing technologies.

The olfactory bulb: coding and processing of odor molecule information.
Science, 1999Olfactory sensory neurons detect a large variety of odor molecules and send information through their axons to the olfactory bulb, the first site for the processing of olfactory information in the brain.

Smell is the oldest sense of living species on our planet and has allowed communication between species from the beginning of life on earth. Odor has always fascinated mankind even in prehistorical times and the use of scented materials is documented since early history.

Artificial odor map and discrimination of odorants using the odor separating system
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2011In this research, achievement of the odor discrimination was examined. At first, odor separating system was developed which imitates the odor receptive mechanism of biological olfaction. A rough detection of odor becomes possible with this device. Therefore, this device makes it possible to measure the molecular size and the polarity of odorant and ...

In this review, we discuss some of the neural processes involved in the perception of odors that, together with audition and vision, provide essential information for analyzing our surroundings. We shall see how odor detection and learning induce substantial structural and functional changes at the first relay of the olfactory system, i.e., the main ...

On the Unpredictability of Odor
Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 2006AbstractThe relationship between molecular structure and odor has fascinated and puzzled chemists for more than a century. Despite a great deal of research on structure–odor relationships, prediction of the odor of a novel molecule remains a statistical exercise and models only provide a probability of the character, threshold, and intensity. Surprises

An odor compass for localizing an odor source
Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, 1996An odor-source localization system has been developed that mimics animal behavior. The directional probe is called an active sampling probe, and was modeled on the behavior of the silkworm moth. It was extended to an odor compass which continuously points towards the direction of the odor source, using a small fan and two semiconductor gas sensors. The

Odor Index: an Integration of Odor Parameters
2008 Providence, Rhode Island, June 29 - July 2, 2008, 2008Abstract An integrated parameter, odor index, is developed to describe an odor and to evaluate odor debate technologies by incorporating the parameters of the odor concentration, odor intensity, and hedonic tone. An assumption is made that the odor index is equivalent to the geometrical mean of odor intensity and hedonic tone.

Pup odor and ultrasonic vocalizations synergistically stimulate maternal attention in mice.
Behavioral Neuroscience, 2013Pup ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), which are emitted by hypothermic pups, and pup odor are thought to be triggers of maternal behavior in mice. We investigated whether pup odor stimulated maternal responses to pup USVs in mother C57BL/6 mice.
