Critical summer foraging tradeoffs in a subarctic ungulate

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 11, Issue 24, Page 17835-17872, December 2021., 2021
Summer diets are crucial for subarctic herbivores and are affected by weather, insect harassment and a variety of environmental changes linked to climate. Dynamic selection for forage quality and quantity in response to phenology and insects in an Arctic ungulate

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 11, Issue 17, Page 11664-11688, September 2021., 2021
We examined the summer foraging behavior of Arctic caribou to assess selection for different nutritional components across the growing season at landscape and patch scales, and determine whether foraging opportunities were constrained by insect harassment.

Micro‐CT imaging of Onchocerca infection of Simulium damnosum s.l. blackflies and comparison of the peritrophic membrane thickness of forest and savannah flies

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 35, Issue 3, Page 231-238, September 2021., 2021
Micro‐computed tomography was used to visualize in 3D an L1 larva of an Onchocerca species within the thoracic musculature of a blackfly, Simulium damnosum s.l., naturally infected in Ghana. There were no statistically significant differences between the mean thicknesses of the peritrophic membranes of forest and savannah blackflies killed 34–48 min ...
