Off-Farm Work and On-Farm Investment
This work has developed a theoretically consistent model of a farm household's choice between working on-farm and working off-farm and the effects of that choice on farm investment choices. The theory demonstrates the potential for wages driven by local economic conditions to be more important to dairy farm investment decisions than characteristics of ...

OFF-FARM WORK AND THE ADOPTION OF HERBICIDE-TOLERANT SOYBEANS
Adoption of herbicide-tolerant (HT) soybeans is proceeding rapidly despite little difference between the net returns to HT versus conventional soybeans. Using a multivariate probit model, we analyze the interaction of off-farm work and adoption and test if farmers adopt HT soybeans because its simplicity and flexibility frees management time.

AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF FARM STRUCTURE AND OFF-FARM WORK DECISIONS
This study considers the extent to which farm structure may be endogenous to off-farm labor supply decisions. The empirical analysis utilizes structural models consisting of three equation systems describing labor supply, scale and scope in an effort to evaluate the extent to which farm and off-farm labor decisions are jointly made.

This study analyzes the impacts of off-farm work on the technical efficiency (TE) of wheat production, using data collected from 549 farming households in China. Unlike previous studies that only capture one dimension of off-farm work, in this study, we consider multiple dimensions, including off-farm work participation status of household heads ...

The Off‐Farm Work Behavior of Farm Operators
American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 1983There is widespread concern about the opportunities for people to begin farming. Most observers argue that the financial barrier to entry into agriculture has risen relative to farm incomes. Several authors have pointed to off-farm earnings as one important way to overcome this barrier (Coffman, Carlin and Ghelfi, Steeves).

Farm and Off-Farm Work Decisions
1977Faced with changing economic conditions, farm operators have dramatically increased the rate at which they divide their work time between self-employing farm work and the wage labor market, a situation which best can be described as multiple labor market participation.

Women's off-farm work and gender stratification
Journal of Rural Studies, 1991Abstract We argue that the traditional conjugal division of labour found in the household reflects more general patterns of gender stratification as deplcted in theories of patriarchal capitalism. We selected the farm household in order to explore empirically factors affecting the organization of family work roles.

An investigation is presented of the determinants of educational selectivity in a framework that emphasizes the coordination of household members. Sectoral time allocation is based on members' comparative advantage, which in turn depends on the utilization and returns to schooling in the farm and nonfarm sectors.

Off-Farm Work and Economic Performance on Corn Farms
2013This paper examines the effect of off-farm work on the economic performance of corn farms. It estimates returns to scale and technical efficiency following an input distance function approach and compares the relative performance of corn farm operator households with and without off-farm work. We use farm-level data from the USDA’s ARMS survey for 2002-
