Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Heart Rate Variability after Off-Pump versus On-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

open access: yesCardiology Research and Practice, 2009
Background. It is known that after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) heart rate variability (HRV) becomes significantly decreased with a gradual recovery in a few months after surgery.

Comparing results of bypass surgery and percutaneous coronary intervention for left main disease by surgical revascularization pump strategyCentral MessagePerspective

open access: yesJTCVS Open, 2023
Objective: We performed a post hoc analysis of the Evaluation of XIENCE versus Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery for Effectiveness of Left Main Revascularization (EXCEL) trial to determine the effect an on-versus off-pump strategy had on outcomes when ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Experience, exposure, and attitudes regarding off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting techniques in US cardiothoracic surgical residents: Results of a surveyCentral MessagePerspective

open access: yesJTCVS Open, 2022
Background: We sought to determine the current level of exposure to and interest in off-pump coronary artery bypass and beating heart surgery techniques regarding cardiothoracic surgical residents in the United States. Methods: An email survey consisting

Conversions in Off-Pump Coronary Surgery

open access: yesThe Heart Surgery Forum, 2005
There have been 784 coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures performed at a new center for treating cardiovascular disease in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the surgical team has been fully trained in offpump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) surgery. All surgical patients were considered for on-pump CABG (ONCAB) and OPCAB surgical procedures.

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

A retrospective observational study of risk factors, angiographic patterns, short-term mortality and their correlations between on- pump and off- pump coronary artery bypass surgery

open access: yesHeart Vessels and Transplantation, 2023
Objective: The decision to perform on-pump or off-pump coronary bypass surgery (CABG) depends on various parameters such as myocardial contractility, thickness of the myocardium and overall surgeon preference.

Disordered but rhythmic—the role of intrinsic protein disorder in eukaryotic circadian timing

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Unstructured domains known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in nearly every part of the eukaryotic core circadian oscillator. IDRs enable many diverse inter‐ and intramolecular interactions that support clock function. IDR conformations are highly tunable by post‐translational modifications and environmental conditions, which ...
