Offshore Substation Design: High-Level Overview of the Industry Best Practices

IEEE Power and Energy Magazine, 2019
The offshore wind industry has been gaining momentum on the East Coast of the United States as its first U.S. offshore wind farm (OWF), off Block Island (30 MW), has been in operation for nearly three years. States such as Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Maryland are all taking significant steps forward in embedding ...

Subsea Substations - Leveraging Existing Technology to Reduce Costs of Offshore Wind

Offshore Technology Conference
Abstract Developing offshore wind, particularly floating wind, presents significant cost challenges. A major portion of these costs, both CAPEX and OPEX, is attributed to the offshore substation within the power transmission infrastructure. By positioning the substation on the seabed and leveraging the low and stable ambient temperature,

Determining Spare Part Inventory for Offshore Wind Farm Substations based on FMEA Analysis

2018 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe), 2018
Spare part management is essential for offshore wind farm operators. In spite of the number of offshore wind farms has significantly increased and the setup is similar in most of the wind farms, there is still a huge number of specialized and custom parts with a non-negligible supply time.

Semi-Submersible Floating Offshore Substation Wave Basin Model Test

Offshore Technology Conference
Abstract Today there is an emerging trend where more offshore wind farms are moving further offshore into deeper waters, the bottom fixed offshore substations are less feasible technically, logistically, and economically. There are quite a few pilot floating wind turbine projects in the world while there are no floating offshore ...

Beatrice Offshore Windfarm, Blackhillock Substation, Moray: results of an archaeological evaluation

2016
The works took place on 5th May 2016 and comprised excavation of two 35m long trenches within the proposed development area for an HVAC substation. A series of medieval cultivation furrows were exposed in one trench indicating the area had been used for agricultural activity in the past, but no other features of archaeological significance were present.
