Oil distribution and churning losses of gearboxes: Experimental and numerical analysis

Tribology International, 2020
Abstract Currently, energy efficiency represents one of the main requisites in mechanical design. Gearboxes play an important role in several industrial applications and, even if they are already characterized by high efficiency, their performance can still be improved, leading to energy saving and the reduction of pollutant emissions.

CFD Simulation for Reduction of Oil Churning Loss and Windage Loss on Aeroengine Transmission Gears

Volume 1: Aircraft Engine; Ceramics; Coal, Biomass and Alternative Fuels; Controls, Diagnostics and Instrumentation; Education; Electric Power; Awards and Honors, 2009
In recent years, the demand for power generation capacity has increased considerably due to the electric drive of air conditioners and so on in the engines of civil aircraft. Therefore, it is estimated that power losses may increase in the gearbox because of generators and pumps that in turn augment fuel consumption.

Oil Churning Power Losses of a Gear Pair: Experiments and Model Validation

Journal of Tribology, 2009
This paper presents the results of an experimental study on load-independent (spin) power losses of spur gear pairs operating under dip-lubricated conditions. The experiments were performed over a wide range of operating speed, temperature, oil levels, and key gear design parameters to quantify their influence on spin power losses.

Influence of dynamic attitudes on oil supply for bearings and churning power losses in a splash lubricated spiral bevel gearbox

Tribology International, 2021
Abstract To study the influence of dynamic flight attitudes on the splash lubrication performance and churning power losses of the intermediate spiral bevel gearbox in a helicopter, a three-dimensional (3D) simulation model consisting of a spiral bevel gear pair, two bearing caps with oil guide holes and the housing is established, and CFD ...

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations and Experiments for Reduction of Oil Churning Loss and Windage Loss in Aeroengine Transmission Gears

Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2014
The demand for power generation capacity has increased considerably due to the electric drive of cabin air conditioners and commercial aircraft engines. It is estimated that power losses may increase in the accessory gearbox due to generators and pumps that augment fuel consumption.

Optimization of Oil Quantity in Manual Transmission and Reducing Churning Loss

SAE Technical Paper Series
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The gearbox is a crucial aggregate in a diesel truck. Gearboxes must work efficiently to get the job done properly and lubrication is vital to this efficiency. Lubricating oil is like the circulation system of a gearbox.

Numerical modelling of oil distribution and churning gear power losses of gearboxes by smoothed particle hydrodynamics

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2018
Sufficient oil supply of all machine elements in gearboxes is usually required to avoid damage during operation. Quite frequently, transmissions are conservatively designed with an oversupply of oil to guarantee operational reliability. An oversupply of oil results in an unnecessarily high amount of oil being kept in motion, which in turn leads to ...
