Lubrication at Extreme Pressures with Mineral Oil Films
Journal of Applied Physics, 1951Intact mineral oil films at average pressures ranging from 86,000 to 215,000 psi and at high rates of shear have been obtained using a bearing consisting of the contact area between crossed axis steel cylinders. Intact films have also been maintained at low rates of shear and lower pressures using a bearing consisting of a sphere in a spherical shell ...

Disjoining Pressure and Film Tension in Comb−Graft Copolymer-Stabilized Oil Films
Langmuir, 1999Thin, supported decane films stabilized with comb−graft copolymers were studied as models of polymeric surfactant stabilized water-in-oil emulsions.

Pressurized Oil Squeeze Film Dampers
Journal of Lubrication Technology, 1980A pressurized oil squeeze film damper supporting a rigid rotor mounted in antifriction bearings is investigated. Orifice and inherent feed inlets are examined, and it is shown that the clearance determines the inlet resistance for a groove or slot. The film stiffness and damping forces are determined as a function of the restrictor coefficient, rotor ...

Applications of automatic control to pressurized oil film bearings
Wear, 1962Expressions for the load-carrying capacity, stiffness and damping rate of pressurized oil film bearings are derived and expressed in terms of the variables available to the designer By adding a simple automatic flow valve, operated by pressure feed-back, the pressurized oil film exhibits infinite stiffness to steady normal loads.

Embedded Optical Sensor for Oil Film Pressure Measurements in Journal Bearings
Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems, Volume 1, 2008The oil film pressure is one of the essential functional parameters in journal bearings. Until now, the oil film pressure has been estimated by theoretical calculations, since the measurement of oil film pressure has been a demanding or even unfeasible task in journal bearings, especially in bearings carrying dynamic loads. In this study a new approach

Measurement of Oil-Film Pressure in Engine Bearings Using a Thin-Film Sensor
Tribology Transactions, 2002Editor's Note: Anyone who thinks that STLE isn't on the cutting edge of MEMS technology should read this paper. In it, the authors have measured oil pressures which occur in main and connecting rod bearings using vacuum deposited thin film pressure sensors measuring less than a millimeter wide and just a few microns thick. Their careful work shows that

Pressure Distribution in Squeeze Film Dampers with Oil Hole Feed
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 1994To improve the damping capability of squeeze film dampers, oil hole feed rather than circumferential groove feed is a practical proposition. However, circular orbit response can no longer be assumed, significantly complicating the design analysis. This paper details a feasible transient solution procedure for such dampers, with particular emphasis on ...

Numerical Study on Pressure Generation Mechanism of Oil Film under Oil Control Ring
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2019<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">To reduce oil consumption in reciprocating engines, many studies have been conducted on the mechanism and control of the upward transport of oil from the sump to the combustion chamber through the gap between the cylinder liner and compression rings, which is the main cause of ...

Study on Oil Film and Pressure Distribution of Micro-EHL
Journal of Tribology, 1992Micro-EHL problems of line contact have been solved by Newton-Raphson method. The results are given from the zero roughness amplitude to the value higher than the film thickness in the smooth surface solution. With the increase of the roughness amplitude, cavitations may be found inside the contact region.

Tapered Spool Controller for Pressurized Oil Film Bearings
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1969The first part of this paper is concerned with the description of the different methods commonly used in compensating pressurized oil film bearings. The load-oil film thickness relationship for different methods of compensation and the power dissipated in bearings are given for the sake of comparison.
