Mechanoregulatory Effects of Cell‐Scale Microwells on Epithelial Cell Phenotype

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In small polycaprolactone microwells, A549 epithelial cells span well edges, in contrast to cells growing on flat substrates. Focal adhesion sites (yellow) concentrate at topographic boundaries, while cytoskeletal tension (magenta stress fibers) is transmitted to the nucleus (blue), reducing nuclear sphericity.

Study of the effect of salt deposition on production capacity and storage capacity in underground gas storage

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
Underground gas storage (UGS) is the most economical and effective means to guarantee stable gas supply. During gas production process, the evaporation of formation water leads to the increase of water content in the gas, and the salinity of the ...

Proposed hot oil pipeline

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 1970
The Department of the Interior has released a report by the U.S. Geological Survey analyzing the potential effects of a proposed hot oil pipeline buried in Alaska's permafrost. Arthur H. Lachenbruch, author of the report, indicates that it is concerned with identifying potential problems before they occur, and that if the pipeline is properly designed,

Propane from the North Slope: Could It Reduce Energy Costs in the Interior? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Could propane from the North Slope cut energy costs in Fairbanks and other Interior communities that heat buildings or generate electricity with fuel oil or naphtha? The Alaska Natural Gas Development Authority (ANGDA) thinks it could. That’s because

Realising the oil supply potential of the CIS: the impact of institutions and policies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This paper provides an overview of the political economy of oil in the CIS. It briefly situates the region’s oil sector potential in the global context, before analysing the structural features of the oil sectors by country.

BACH, a Bayesian Optimization Protocol for Accurate Coarse‐Grained Parameterization of Organic Liquids

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present a fully automated Bayesian optimization (BO) protocol for the parameterization of nonbonded interactions in coarse‐grain CG force fields (BACH). Using experimental thermophysical data, we apply the protocol to a broad range of liquids, spanning linear, branched, and unsaturated hydrocarbons, esters, triglycerides, and water.

The Economics of Barley Production in the Delta Junction Area of Interior Alaska [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
The discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay on the north slope of Alaska and the subsequent initial lease sale for rights to drill for oil on state land marked the beginning of a new era in the economy of the state.

Ultrasmall Platinum Nanoparticles for Radiation‐Enhanced Cancer Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work proposes a nanomedicine‐based strategy to enhance X‐ray radiotherapy for cancer treatment. Ultrasmall Pt‐NPs exhibit catalase‐like activity that may contribute to modulation of the tumor microenvironment and amplify interactions between radiation and biological matter, leading to increased DNA damage.

Heavy Oil Transportation by Pipeline [PDF]

open access: yesVolume 2: Design, Construction, and Operation Innovations; Compression and Pump Technology; SCADA, Automation, and Measurement; System Simulation; Geotechnical and Environmental, 1996
More of the crude oil being produced in the world is heavy oil. It was reported by Meyer and Dietzman (1979) that world annual production of heavy crude oil was about five percent of other oil produced. They forecast that heavy crude oil production would increase.

Monitoring of Oil and Gas Pipelines by Use of VTOL-Type Unmanned Aerial Vehicles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The vast and diverse spread of the oil and gas pipeline infrastructure makes real-time monitoring of the entire network a very costly task. This topology has provided vandals and crude-oil thieves with the opportunity of tapping the pipelines and ...
