Oil Pollution in the Southeastern Baltic Sea by Satellite Remote Sensing Data in 2004-2015

open access: yesTransport and Telecommunication, 2016
The results of satellite monitoring of oil pollution in the Southeastern Baltic Sea in 2004-2015 are discussed in the paper. Interannual and seasonal variability of oil pollution is investigated. A steady decrease in total oil pollution was observed from

New problems and opportunities of oil spill monitoring systems [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, 2015
Emergency oil and oil products spills represent a great danger to the environment, including ecosystems, and to the population. New problems of such dangerous spills and methods of early detection are discussed in this paper.

In situ burning of oil spills

open access: yesJournal of Research of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2001
For more than a decade NIST conducted research to understand, measure and predict the important features of burning oil on water. Results of that research have been included in nationally recognized guidelines for approval of intentional burning. NIST measurements and predictions have played a major role in establishing in situ burning as a primary oil

Semi-Automatic Oil Spill Detection on X-Band Marine Radar Images Using Texture Analysis, Machine Learning, and Adaptive Thresholding

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
Oil spills bring great damage to the environment and, in particular, to coastal ecosystems. The ability of identifying them accurately is important to prompt oil spill response.

A Novel Approach in Oil Spill Detection, Identification, and Classification via Multisource Technologies and Artificial Intelligence [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences
The Mediterranean Sea has a substantial volume of maritime traffic, including many tankers ferrying oil from eastern sources to western refineries. This critical maritime front, vital for trade and connectivity, also poses a significant risk of oil ...

Environmental Impacts and Challenges Associated with Oil Spills on Shorelines

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2022
Oil spills are of great concern because they impose a threat to the marine ecosystem, including shorelines. As oil spilled at sea is transported to the shoreline, and after its arrival, its behavior and physicochemical characteristics change because of ...

Immediate ecotoxicological effects of short-lived oil spills on marine biota

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Large oil spills have negative effects on marine ecosystems, but the effects of chronic smallscale spills are less well understood. Here, Brussaard et al.

Metagenomics and Quantitative Stable Isotope Probing Offer Insights into Metabolism of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Degraders in Chronically Polluted Seawater

open access: yesmSystems, 2021
Oil spills in the marine environment have a devastating effect on marine life and biogeochemical cycles through bioaccumulation of toxic hydrocarbons and oxygen depletion by hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria.

Experimental Characterization of Mycelium‐Based Composites Under Multiple Loading Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines the mechanical response of mycelium‐based composites under compression, shear, and tension using mechanical testing and imaging methods. The comparison between unpressed and hot‐pressed specimens shows that hot pressing is associated with higher compression and shear stiffnesses.

Study on the Oil Spill Transport Behavior and Multifactorial Effects of the Lancang River Crossing Pipeline

open access: yesApplied Sciences
As the number of long-distance oil and gas pipelines crossing rivers increases, so does the risk of river oil spills. Previous research on oil spills in water mainly focuses on the oceans, and there are relatively few studies on oil spills in rivers ...
