Microseismicity and faulting in the southwestern Okinawa Trough

Tectonophysics, 2009
Abstract In November 2003, 15 ocean bottom seismometers were deployed in the southwestern Okinawa Trough. More than 3300 microearthquakes were located during the 10-days passive seismic experiment. The earthquake activity is characterized by the ceaseless occurrence of small earthquakes in the vicinity of all the instruments.

A study on element-stratigraphy of Okinawa Trough

Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 1988
Regular distribution patterns of elements Ca, Sr, K, Na, Mg, Fe, Mn, Ti, Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cr, Rb, Ba, Cd, and U in Late Quaternary strata have been studied in detail. The regional variation patterns of elements in these strata are similar to those in recent surface sediments, showing that the sedimentary environment has been relatively stable since ...

The tectonics beneath the Okinawa Trough

Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 1984
The nature of the crust of the Okinawa Trough is different from that of the continental shelf in the East China Sea. The crust beneath the Trough is in transformation from continental to oceanic and the depth of MOHO in the northern section of the Trough is deeper than in the southern section.

Monoterpinenes as terrigenous markers in Okinawa Trough sediments

Geochemistry, 1984
Monoterpinenes were isolated from Okinawa Trough sediments at the 1000-m water depth by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and identified by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-data system (GC-MS-DS). Identification has revealed cyclohexene, 1-methyl-5-(1-methylethenyl), cyclohexene, 1-methyl-3-(1-methylethenyl), and ...

On tectonic problems of the Okinawa Trough

Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 2001
The Okinawa Trough is a very active tectonic zone at the margin of the Northwest Pacific and is typical of back-are-rifting at the young stage of tectonic evolution. Many scientists from Japan, China, Germany, France, the U.S.A. and Russia have done a lot of geologic and geophysical investigations there.

Basic geochemical characteristics of sediments in the Okinawa trough

Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 1986
A total of 21 elements, Si, Al, K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Ti, P, Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cr, Rb, Sr Ba, Cd and Corg(organic carbon), was determined in the trough. Average contents of most elements were found to be higher in the trough bottom than in the western and eastern slopes.

Sea of Japan and Okinawa Trough

1985
The northeastern margin of the Asiatic continent is fringed by trench—arc—back-arc systems. Best known is a system consisting of the Japan Trench—Nankai Trough, Japanese island arcs, and the Sea of Japan. The Sea of Japan is, as a whole, a marginal sea with an area of about 1 million km2, bounded on the north by Sikhote Alin eastern Siberia, on the ...

Active hydrothermal mounds in the Okinawa Trough backarc basin, Japan

Tectonophysics, 1988
Abstract Dive studies by the “SHINKAI 2000” were made in September, 1984 and July, 1986 in the central axial rift of the Middle Okinawa Trough, a possible active backarc basin in a nascent stage. Hydrothermally active mounds were discovered on a small knoll (27°34.4′N, 127°08.6′E) directly south of the area where a high heat flow (higher than 1 W/m2)

Seismicity and stress field in Okinawa Trough and Ryukyu regions

Acta Seismologica Sinica, 1994
According to the seismic data (m b≥5.0) from 1977 to 1991 and the focal mechanisms of 68 earthquakes from 1961 to 1991, the characters of seismicity and stress field in Okinawa Trough and Ryukyu regions are discussed in this paper, and the paper suggests that: 1) the Tokara Channel fault belt is a fault belt with seismicity, cutting through lithosphere.

Magmatic evolution of Okinawa Trough during its early spreading stage

Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 1994
The Okinawa Trough is different from other typical backarc spreading basins because the, acidic volcanic rock (pumice) is extensively distributed in it. Systematic mineralogical and petrochemical study on a representative core (Z14–5) to characterize the magmatic evolution of the Trough during its early spreading stage showed that the pumice magma was ...
