Old-Growth Forest and Jobs

1996
An optimal control model is constructed where the cutting of old-growth forest generates jobs and adds to the stock of land devoted to "newgrowth," rotational forestry. Welfare is determined by the number of jobs in the forest economy and the stock of old-growth forest, which provides "nontimber" benefits.

Old Growth

2008
Abstract The commentator Howard Berkes, on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, said something about planting trees, and I tuned back in. When I’m driving, I have the bad habit of keeping the radio on, positively in the phrase “small is beautiful.” If he were alive today, he might add that small is also enduring.

Old-Growth: What Is It?

Journal of Forestry, 2004
Abstract Old-growth has been used and understood by foresters and ecologists for a long time. The term implies that the organism must be old, becoming overmature, senescent, slow growing, and declining in vigor. But the precise characteristics and attributes of the term are not identified.

EGF: new tricks for an old growth factor

Current Opinion in Cell Biology, 1993
During the past year, the biology of epidermal growth factor (EGF) has been investigated in lower organisms (Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila and bacteria). These experiments have produced some surprising results: the identification of defects produced by mutation of EGF-like genes; the role of EGF receptors in bacterial invasion; and the role of EGF-

Distance decay in an old‐growth neotropical forest

Journal of Vegetation Science, 2005
Abstract. Questions: Does distance decay exist in an old‐growth neotropical forest? Is this distance decay stronger than expected due to environmental heterogeneity alone? At what spatial scales are distance decay manifested?Location: La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica, Central America. Methods: An index of distance decay is applied appropriate

Old Growth in the Runkle Woods [PDF]

open access: possible
In this conservation proposal, Wright State students focus on protecting the old growth areas of Runkle Woods—a rare and ecologically significant habitat in the Eastern United States, where only about 1% of such forests remain. Home to trees over 200 years old and critical species like endangered bats and white oaks, this 100-acre area faces threats ...
