Zoning of phosphorus in igneous olivine
We describe P zoning in olivines from terrestrial basalts, andesites, dacites, and komatiites and from a martian meteorite. P2O5 contents of olivines vary from below the detection limit (≤0.01 wt%) to 0.2–0.4 wt% over a few microns, with no correlated variations in Fo content.

Abstract Olivine from mafic–ultramafic intrusions rarely displays growth zoning in major and some minor elements, such as Fe, Mg and Ni, due to fast diffusion of these elements at high temperatures. These elements in olivine are thus not useful in deciphering magma chamber processes, such as magma convection, multiple injection and mixing.

Zoning in olivine xenocryst in hydrous systems
Chemical zoning in xenocrysts may be inherited, the result of magmatic growth, or diffusive ion exchange with the host magma. To quantify magma residence times of xenocrysts based on diffusion zoning patterns thus requires knowledge of the contribution of diffusion to the zoning patterns and knowledge of appropriate diffusion coefficients.

The analysis of zoning in magmatic crystals with emphasis on olivine
Contributions To Mineralogy and Petrology, 1984Many of the observed features of zoning in magmatic phenocrysts may be due to the orientation of the section rather than inherent properties of the crystals. An ideal section for the studying of zoning in magmatic crystals has two characteristics: it goes through the center of the crystal, and is perpendicular to one or more crystal faces.

Striped iron zoning of olivine induced by dislocation creep in deformed peridotites
Nature, 2001Deformation of solid materials affects not only their microstructures, but also their microchemistries. Although chemical unmixing of initially homogeneous multicomponent solids is known to occur during deformation by diffusion creep, there has been no report on their chemical zoning due to deformation by dislocation creep, in either natural samples or

Calcium zoning in olivine and its relationship to silica activity and pressure
Geochimica Et Cosmochimica Acta, 1973Abstract Microprobe analyses of olivine phenocrysts from nephelinite and basanite lavas show strong zoning toward calcium enrichment. Tholeiitic and other more siliceous lavas show little or no such calcium enrichment, but more extensive magnesium to iron zoning.

Cracking the olivine zoning code: Distinguishing between crystal growth and diffusion
Geology, 2015Olivine composition and zoning patterns are widely used to reconstruct the evolution of mafic magmas from source to surface and to extract time scales of magmatic processes. Deciphering the olivine zoning code is challenging because the contributions of growth and diffusion may overlap.

Cryptic zoning in primitive olivine as an archive of mush fluidization at mid-ocean ridges
