Neonatal intestinal obstruction from omphalomesenteric duct remnants [PDF]

Three cases of omphalomesenteric band obstruction in early infancy with various radiographic presentations, including intermittent obstruction in one, are reported. Small-bowel volvulus was found in all three patients at surgery. One case progressed to bowel necrosis with portal venous gas.

Omphalomesenteric Duct Remnants

In the human embryo, the omphalomesenteric duct exists as a long, narrow tube that joins the yolk sac to the digestive tube. During the seventh week of gestation, the duct usually undergoes complete obliteration. Incomplete obliteration results in omphalomesenteric remnants, which may be completely asymptomatic throughout life.
