Aircraft measurements for calibration of an orbiting spacecraft sensor

Applied Optics, 1985
The best method of establishing a calibration for a satellite sensor is to make simultaneous measurements along the satellite view vector from a calibrated instrument on board a high-altitude aircraft. The satellite sensor prelaunch radiance calibration can then be compared to the in-orbit radiance values produced by comparison with the simultaneous ...

Preflight Spectral Calibration of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2011
We report on the preflight spectral calibration of the first Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) instrument. In particular, the instrument line shape (ILS) function as well as spectral position was determined experimentally for all OCO channels. Initial determination of these characteristics was conducted through laser-based spectroscopic measurements ...

Preflight Radiometric Calibration of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2011
This paper describes the radiometric calibration of the original Orbiting Carbon Observatory. The calibration process required characterizing both the dark current level and gain coefficients of each instrumental channel. The dark response was characterized with extensive testing and revealed some unexpected instrument behavior.

Overview of the EOS/ MODIS on-orbit calibration and performance

Proceedings. 2005 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2005. IGARSS '05., 2005
The MODIS is one of the key instruments of NASA's EOS mission and is currently operating on both the Terra and Aqua satellites. It has 20 reflective solar bands (RSB) with wavelengths from 0.41 to 2.2µm and 16 thermal emissive bands (TEB) from 3.7 to 14.4µm and makes observations at three nadir spatial resolutions: 0.25km, 0.5km, and 1km.

On-orbit calibration of inductosyn error

Proceedings of 1994 American Control Conference - ACC '94, 2005
The rotary-type inductosyn is a device used for measurement of angular displacement. Because of practical limitation in mounting and electronics tolerances, the readout from the inductosyn is corrupted with the errors, which need to be calibrated in order to satisfy the stringent angular measurement accuracy requirement.

An overview of MODIS on-orbit calibration and instrument performance

IGARSS 2003. 2003 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37477), 2004
The MODIS ProtoFlight Model on-board the EOS Terra spacecraft was launched on December 18, 1999 and the Flight Model 1 on-board the EOS Aqua spacecraft was launched on May 04, 2002. Together they have produced over 5 years of calibrated data sets from which many land, oceans, and atmosphere products have been developed and provided to the science ...

Assessment of MODIS Thermal Emissive Band On-Orbit Calibration

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2011
Sixteen Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer thermal emissive bands (TEBs) cover the wavelength from 3.75 to 14.24 m. TEB calibration uses data collected from the detector responses to the onboard blackbody (BB) and space view.

WindSat SDR and EDR on orbit calibration and validation

IGARSS 2003. 2003 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37477), 2004
The Coriolus spacecraft was successfully launched on 6 January 2003. Its primary payload is the WindSat fully polarimetric radiometer. WindSat is a first-of-its-kind instrument that will remotely sense the speed and direction of near surface winds over the ocean by measuring the partial correlation between orthogonally polarized components of natural ...

In orbit sun calibration performance of Landsat-2

Applied Optics, 1975
Sun calibration data from Landsat-2 are presented and compared with those from Landsat-1 (ERTS-1). The data support the hypothesis that organic contamination caused the poor performance of the Landsat-1 sun calibration mirror, since extra cleanliness precautions were taken with the Landsat-2 mirror.

Vicarious Calibration of Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2019
Vicarious calibration methods use well-characterized surface sites to complement other on-orbit radiometric calibration techniques. Since 2009, NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) and Japan’s Greenhouse gasses Observing SATellite teams have conducted annual campaigns at Railroad Valley, NV, USA, for this purpose.
