Después de que entrase en vigor la “Ley del apellido” en 1934, todos los ciudadanos turcos empezaron a llevar nombre y un apellido. El nombre podía contener varias palabras pero el apellido tenía que ser una única palabra. Según esta ley el padre de cada familia tenía que elegir un apellido para su familia.
