Opacity testing is formalized and studied. We specify opacity testers as well as tested systems by (timed) process algebras. We model various testers according to how sophisticated observations of tested system they can make and which kind of conclusions they can obtain. We use this technique to define several realistic security properties.

Opacity may affect both the means used to implement policies and the real objectives that they pursue. Our concern with opacity is limited to the cases when it is the result of obfuscation. that is, of some effort on the part of governments or other public bodies (central banks or international organisations) to hide or misrepresent their choices.

Journal of Biological Standardization, 1980Two hitherto unreported consequences of adopting the 5th International Reference Preparation of Opacity (5th IRP) are pointed out: (1) The previously-used expression ‘O.U./ml’ as an index of bacterial concentration is no longer meaningful, since the 5th IRP explicitly defines the Opacity Unit ( without per ml ) as a measure of concentration.

[Opacity and opacity changes in composites].
Deutsche zahnarztliche Zeitschrift, 1992The opacity of 5 self-curing and 11 light-curing composite resins was measured 24 hours after sample/preparation and after 6 months of storage (dry or in water) by means of an UV-visible spectrophotometer. The opacity of the investigated hybrid composite resins was between 47.3 and 62.4%.
