The difference between bounded flows and flows in which free surfaces are present is that the flow areas in free-surface flows are not determined by their fixed boundaries, but by the need to maintain continuity of flow while obeying dynamic laws. Before examining the complex conditions that can arise in free surface flows, it is necessary to consider ...

Increased hydraulic resistance in combining open channel flows
Water Research, 1994Abstract In combining open channel flows, blockage at the junction is manifested by the rise in the stage due to the effect of lateral inflow from the branch channel. Blockage results in pockets of flow where the flow velocity is very small and the depth of flow is large.

Three kinds of approaches are used to obtain the equation used in open-channel hydraulics. However, all of these mathematical forms originate from the Newtonian equation, and a criterion for choosing one rather than another does not really exist.

Transition from Hydraulic Jump to Open Channel Flow
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1996This technical note presents the results of a laboratory study of the transition region from the end of a hydraulic jump to fully developed open channel flow. The velocity profile changes from that of a wall jet to the semilogarithmic form of open channel flow.

Principles of Hydraulics of Open Channels
2017The present chapter reports the basic principles governing open channel flows. The aim is to furnish a synthetic but comprehensive analysis of the main phenomena occurring in open channels. Nevertheless, the most important governing equations are analytically derived in order to give readers a complete and, at the same time, rigorous explanation of the

Open-Channel Capacity Determination Using Hydraulic Performance Graph
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2000A method for determining the flow carrying capacity of a channel system, capable of accounting for the interacting backwater effect among channel reaches and incoming lateral flow, is presented here. The method makes use of hydraulic performance graphs—a new tool for dealing with open-channel-flow problems.

Critical flow condition in open channel hydraulics
Acta Mechanica, 1985Transition between sub- and supercritical flows in open channel occurs at the so-called critical point, for which critical flow conditions appear. This particular flow state has been originally introduced for flows with parallel streamlines. However, as streamlines are considerably sloped and inclined in the vicinity of the critical point, these ...

On pseudo-uniform flow in open channel hydraulics
Acta Mechanica, 1984The differential equation that governs the longitudinal variation of the surface profileh(x) in steady plane channel flow is qualitatively discussed for the case of pseudo-uniform flow states. The solutions are either of the cnoidal or solitary wave type. It is shown that, among all cnoidal waves, solitary waves have minimum energy head.
