OPEN CHOLECYSTECTOMY: A CONTROL GROUP FOR COMPARISON WITH LAPAROSCOPIC CHOLECYSTECTOMY
Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery, 1992Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is rapidly becoming accepted as the best method for the treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis. Randomized clinical trials comparing laparoscopic cholecystectomy with open cholecystectomy are unlikely to be performed. In order to compare these two operations, surgeons need an historical control group of patients who have ...

Open Cholecystectomy for Gallbladder Disease
Journal of Medical Insight, 2023Gallbladder diseases are a subset of a spectrum of pathologies of the biliary system and are a particularly common etiology of abdominal pain encountered in modern medicine. These pathologies most often share a similar underlying mechanism of disease: obstruction of a portion of the biliary tree by cholelithiasis, or gallstones.

Cost-effectiveness of laparoscopic cholecystectomy versus open cholecystectomy
The American Journal of Surgery, 1993To assess the cost-effectiveness of laparoscopic cholecystectomy versus open cholecystectomy from the payer's perspective, we estimated the probabilities of potential outcomes of each procedure, associated quality-of-life effects, and related direct medical charges and incorporated these estimates into a computerized simulation model.

Comparison of laparoscopic cholecystectomy with open cholecystectomy in a single center
The American Journal of Surgery, 1993In this retrospective study, we compared the results of 1,283 open cholecystectomies (OCs) performed at our medical center during the pre-laparoscopic era with 1,107 laparoscopic cholecystectomies (LCs) performed from 1990 to 1992. There was no difference in the percentage of cases of acute and chronic cholecystitis in each time period (16.8% in each),

Risk factors for conversion of laparoscopic cholecystectomy to open cholecystectomy
Surgical Endoscopy, 2005Conversion to open cholecystectomy is still required in some patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate preoperative factors associated with conversion to open cholecystectomy in elective cholecystectomy and acute cholecystitis. The records of 1,804 patients who underwent cholecystectomy from May 1992 to January 2004 were reviewed retrospectively ...

Laparoscopic versus open cholecystectomy in children
Pediatric Surgery International, 1997Twenty-one consecutive laparoscopic cholecystectomies (LC) were compared with 29 consecutive open cholecystectomies (OC). Sickle-cell disease (SCD) was the most common reason for cholecystectomy in both groups. The average length of operative time for LC was significantly longer than that of OC (P=0.0149).

Laparoscopic and Open Cholecystectomy in Surgical Training [PDF]
Background: Open cholecystectomy (OC) may still be necessary in surgical training to perform safe conversions of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Our aim was to study the outcome of LCs and OCs performed by surgical trainees. Methods: All consecutive cholecystectomies (1,581 LCs and 984 OCs) were retrospectively ...

Patient Compliance in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy versus Open Cholecystectomy
The Egyptian Journal of Hospital Medicine, 2018Gallbladder disease is one of the most mutual procedures done worldwide. Earlier, an open technique was the regular procedure for cholecystectomy. This typically encompassed performing an intraoperative cholangiogram, and individuals regularly had a two to six-day post-operative hospital stay.

A financial analysis of laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy
Surgical Endoscopy, 1995Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is now the method of choice in treatment of symptomatic gallstone disease. Despite its rapidly growing popularity, comparative costs of this new method and open cholecystectomy (OC) remain unclear. The most outstanding feature of laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the period of short recovery.
