Inter-Population Hybrids in Open-Pollinated Varieties of Maize

The American Naturalist, 1957
Crosses between three open-pollinated varieties of maize exhibit heterosis in yield in the F1 generation and the F2 performance is intermediate between parents and F1. These findings are in contrast to those in Drosophila where the F2 has been found equal or inferior to parent strains in characters relating to fitness and they have been interpreted as ...

Response of Hybrid and Open‐Pollinated Safflower to Plant Population

Agronomy Journal, 1994
AbstractFour safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) cultivars were evaluated at five plant populations in experiments over 2 yr at three North Dakota locations. Differences in achene yield due to plant population were not significant. Hybrid AGC‐353 produced significantly higher achene yield than the other cultivars.

Breeding Open-Pollinated, Hybrid and Transgenic Outcrossing Species

2015
At least 50 % of crops are outcrossing species whose reproductive system includes devices promoting it. These species exhibit mild to severe inbreeding depression and significant heterosis. There are composite, hybrid, and synthetic cultivars of outcrossing species.
