INVESTIGATING INTENSIFIER EFFECTS IN LOW-RESOURCE LANGUAGES USING CONVENTIONAL AND DEEP LEARNING MODELS [PDF]

open access: yesICTACT Journal on Soft Computing
In this study, two machine learning models, Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and BERT are used to predict intensifiers in Malayalam sentences. Both models were trained to detect intensifiers using part-of-speech (POS) tags, and BERT regularly outperformed ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Open source virtual environments in computer forensics

open access: yes, 2008
In this paper we discuss the potential role of virtual environments in the analysis phase of computer forensics investigations. We argue that commercial closed source computer forensics software has certain limitations, and we propose a method which may ...

Open source in the classroom

open access: yesIEEE Distributed Systems Online, 2005
A recently released study by the British Educational Communications and Technology concluded that UK primary schools could radically reduce their technology spending - by almost 50 percent - if they replaced vendor software and systems in favor of nonproprietary, open source products.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

The usability of open source software: analysis and prospects

open access: yes, 2006
Open source communities have successfully developed many pieces of software although most computer users only use proprietary applications. The usability of open source software is often regarded as one reason for this limited distribution. In this paper

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
