A Survey of Load Balancing Approaches Based on Switch Migration in Software‐Defined Networks

open access: yesIET Networks, Volume 14, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
In this article, after discussing the load balancing of multiple controllers as one of the research challenges in this field, its solution through the switch migration is investigated. A variety of load balancing methods based on switch migration are investigated and then a comprehensive comparison is made between them.

An Implementation of Deep Reinforcement Learning‐Based Routing Framework for Open‐Network Operating System‐Controlled and Mininet‐Emulated Software‐Defined Networking

open access: yesIET Networks, Volume 14, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
Software‐defined networking (SDN) has emerged as a groundbreaking architecture that separates the control plane from the data plane, relocating it to a more computationally capable central controller. Here, we present a systematic guide to implementing such schemes in Java‐based and open‐source open network operating system (ONOS) SDN controllers.

FastRule: Efficient Flow Entry Updates for TCAM-Based OpenFlow Switches

open access: yesIEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 2019
With an increasing demand for flexible management in software-defined networks (SDNs), it becomes critical to minimize the network policy update time. Although major SDN controllers are now optimized for rapid network update at the control plane, there ...

The beacon openflow controller [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the second ACM SIGCOMM workshop on Hot topics in software defined networking, 2013
Beacon is a Java-based open source OpenFlow controller created in 2010. It has been widely used for teaching, research, and as the basis of Floodlight. This paper describes the architectural decisions and implementation that achieves three of Beacon's goals: to improve developer productivity, to provide the runtime ability to start and stop existing ...

Abnormal Traffic Detection Method Based on DCNN‐GRU Architecture in SDN

open access: yesInternational Journal of Intelligent Systems, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
In response to the centralized single‐architecture abnormal traffic detection method in Software Defined Network (SDN), which consumes massive computational and network resources, and may lead to the decline of service quality of SDN network, this paper proposes a large‐scale abnormal traffic detection method of SDN network based on Distributed ...

Make Flows Great Again: A Hybrid Resilience Mechanism for OpenFlow Networks

open access: yesInformation, 2018
A top concern in Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is the management of network flows. The resource limitation in SDN devices, e.g., Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) size, and the signaling overhead between the control and data plane elements ...
