The 2025 Mw 8.8 Kamchatka Megathrust: A Rapid Recurrence With Complex Heterogeneous Rupture

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract On 29 July 2025, a Mw 8.8 earthquake struck Kamchatka, ∼50 km from the 1952 Mw 9.0 megathrust hypocenter, exhibiting a comparable aftershock zone. We resolve the kinematic rupture process and slip distribution by combining teleseismic waveforms with high‐quality tsunami data.

Global Kilometer‐Scale Climate Storylines Using Spectral Nudging

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 18, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Effective climate adaptation benefits from detailed, actionable information on how specific extreme events are influenced by climate change. Here we present the first global, kilometer‐scale coupled modeling framework that enables counterfactual reconstructions of recent weather events, including extremes, in different climates.

Modeling Study on Enhancing Overall Sediment Transport Efficiency in a Reservoir‐River Coupled System of the Middle and Lower Yellow River

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 5, May 2026.
Graphical Abstract Abstract Effective sediment management in reservoir–river coupled systems remains a global challenge due to the conflicting objectives of sediment evacuation from reservoirs and deposition reduction in downstream reaches. This study proposed a physics‐based modeling framework oriented to a reservoir–river coupled system, which ...

PPQSort: Pattern‐Defeating Parallel Quicksort

open access: yesConcurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience, Volume 38, Issue 7, April 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper presents PPQSort (Pattern‐defeating Parallel Quicksort), a new parallel quicksort algorithm that provides high performance and ease of use. PPQSort uses C++ threads for parallelization, achieving efficient sorting without external libraries and allowing seamless integration across different computing environments.

MPI‐Based Approaches to Overlap Computation and I/O in Geophysical Simulations

open access: yesConcurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience, Volume 38, Issue 7, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Geophysical simulations, such as wave propagation, are often constrained by I/O bottlenecks, where a significant portion of the execution time is spent writing data to disk. This process frequently leaves expensive computational resources, such as GPUs, idle, directly impacting both performance and energy consumption.

Deterministic Consistency: A Programming Model for Shared Memory Parallelism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The difficulty of developing reliable parallel software is generating interest in deterministic environments, where a given program and input can yield only one possible result.
