OpenStreetMap is a wiki-style map of the world. In this animation, each time a feature is entered or updated it flashes white and then decays through yellow and red to purple. Some edits are a result of a physical local survey by a contributor with a GPS unit and a notepa. Other edits are done remotely using aerial photography or out-of-copyright maps.

Destination Signs in OpenStreetMap
Proceedings of the 12th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Workshop on Computational Transportation Science, 2019In this paper we investigate the mapping quality of destination signs in OpenStreetMap and show how this data can be instrumented for route planning purposes. Our proposed algorithm provides concise driving directions as well as faster query times compared to an ordinary Dijkstra computation.

OpenStreetSLAM: Global vehicle localization using OpenStreetMaps
2013 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2013In this paper we propose an approach for global vehicle localization that combines visual odometry with map information from OpenStreetMaps to provide robust and accurate estimates for the vehicle's position. The main contribution of this work comes from the incorporation of the map data as an additional cue into the observation model of a Monte Carlo ...

Naming Jerusalem on OpenStreetMap
2021In this chapter, I discuss the politics of toponomy in Jerusalem on OpenStreetMap, a collaborative mapping platform that, despite being ostensibly open to contributions from everyone, offers a surprisingly one-sided representation of Jerusalem. The absence of Palestinian names from the map could be interpreted as an objective reflection of reality ‘on ...
