AbstractThis paper is an overview of the Trio system which enables users to simultaneously develop and execute programs at three terminals. The system consists of an operating system written in Concurrent Pascal and a set of standard programs written in Sequential Pascal. The system has been used on a PDP 11/55 minicomputer since spring 1979. This work

Operating systems architecture
Proceedings of the May 5-7, 1970, spring joint computer conference on - AFIPS '70 (Spring), 1970Operating systems architecture refers to the overall design of hardware and software components and their operational effectiveness as a whole. To be effective, however, an operating system must not only be cognizant of the collection of hardware and software modules, but must also be designed in light of the programs and data which the system ...

The explainable operating system
2005Contemporary operating systems still appear as huge monolithic objects. Each attempt to explain one of them's architecture typically results in the tedious enumeration of a large number of mutually depending features. To overcome that situation, a discipline on system architecture should be established aimed at the provision of understandable ...

Proceedings of the 2nd annual conference on Computer graphics and interactive techniques - SIGGRAPH '75, 1975
Stand alone graphic systems and time-shared graphics provide different benefits to a user. The same is true of refresh graphics and storage displays. An operating system is described which supports these combined modes through the integration of graphics into the operating system.

Proceedings of the 7th workshop on ACM SIGOPS European workshop Systems support for worldwide applications - EW 7, 1996
We introduce server operating systems, which are sets of abstractions and runtime support for specialized, high-performance server applications. We have designed and are implementing a prototype server OS with support for aggressive specialization, direct device-to-device access, an event-driven organization, and dynamic compiler-assisted ILP.

An operating system accelerator
Journal of Systems Architecture, 1998A RISC-style hardware accelerator for operating systems (OS), named the mechanism of multiprocessing (MMP) processor, is presented. The MMP processor implements the set of MMP primitives of the MMP mechanism with which the ES operating was enhanced. The architecture and organisation of this processor were devised to facilitate fast execution of the MMP

The operating system for technec
COMPSAC 79. Proceedings. Computer Software and The IEEE Computer Society's Third International Applications Conference, 1979., 2005An operating system is described that was designed to permit the distributed execution of programs composed of collections of communicating tasks on a network of microcomputers. A part of the system on each of the computers provides multitasking and message passing.

This paper discusses teaching an Operating Systems Course. Different approaches to teaching the course are presented. An operating systems course is one of the kernel courses in computer curriculum of both China and other countries. This course is of critical importance for students to understand the working procedures and principles of modern computer

Are operating systems at RISC?
2005A new generation of high speed microprocessors has become the standard in a number of workstation environments. The technology, RISC, has made high speed processing a reality at a relatively low price. The basic design goal of the RISC is aimed at higher speed execution of application programs and was based on an analysis of volumes of such code. It is
