On protection in operating systems
Proceedings of the fifth symposium on Operating systems principles - SOSP '75, 1975A model of protection mechanisms in computing systems is presented and its appropriateness is demonstrated. The “safety” problem for protection systems under our model is to determine in a given situation whether a subject can acquire a particular right to an object.

Proceedings of the 7th workshop on ACM SIGOPS European workshop Systems support for worldwide applications - EW 7, 1996
We introduce server operating systems, which are sets of abstractions and runtime support for specialized, high-performance server applications. We have designed and are implementing a prototype server OS with support for aggressive specialization, direct device-to-device access, an event-driven organization, and dynamic compiler-assisted ILP.

This chapter discusses Portuguese policies and Indian reactions concerning the horse trade, general trade control, and technology. The Portuguese arrival in the Indian Ocean meant that for perhaps fifty years the trade through the Red Sea to the Mediterranean and so to Venice suffered greatly, though not consistently.

Telemetering for system operation
Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1953The paper outlines the requirements of power-system control engineers in respect of telemetered intelligence to facilitate load dispatching. The problems associated with providing these continuous readings are dealt with, and a new electronic telemeter system is described which has advantages with regard to response and accuracy, and permits several ...

A networking operating system is one which allows hosts to intercommunicate using operating system support. Thus, networking is built into the operating system, and not just an add-on. Many early versions of operating systems from Microsoft, including DOS and Microsoft Windows Version 3, had networking as an add-on to the operating system, thus proved ...

Proceedings of the 1990 ACM SIGSMALL/PC symposium on Small systems - SIGSMALL '90, 1990
A multitasking operating system for an IBM PC or compatible has been developed to provide students with an educational opportunity for hands-on experience with concurrent programming concepts. The operating system includes features which permit users to observe performance as a function of the I/O versus compute bound processes.

Processes and Operating Systems
2012This chapter covers multiple-process systems. It compares scheduling algorithms, including the interaction between language design and scheduling mechanisms. It evaluates operating system architectures and the overhead incurred by the operating system and also considers methods for verifying the behavior of multiple process systems.
