Monitoring Operative Risk in the Elderly
Survey of Anesthesiology, 1981To reduce operative mortality in elderly patients, a system of preoperative staging, based on invasive monitoring, was developed. All of the 148 consecutive patients studied had been cleared for surgery by standard assessment, but only 13.5% had normal measured, hemodynamic, respiratory, and oxygen transport function.

Operator stress and monitoring practices
Applied Ergonomics, 1992This study attempted to identify the major sources of work-related stress among telephone operators, with special emphasis on computer monitoring and telephone surveillance. A cross-sectional random sample of over 700 telephone operators participated in a questionnaire survey (response rate = 88%).

Operative Monitoring of Parathyroid Gland Hyperfunction
Survey of Anesthesiology, 1991With a 20-year experience of more than 700 parathyroidectomies, our persistent hypercalcemic postoperative failure rate of 7% has remained constant. Reasons for failure have been misdiagnosis or inability of the surgeon to detect and excise all hypersecreting glands.

A Method to Monitor Operator Overloading
2009This paper describes research that aims to quantify stress levels of operators who perform multiple tasks. The proposed method is based on the thermal signature of the face. It measures physiological function from a stand-off distance and therefore, it can unobtrusively monitor a machine operator. The method was tested on 11 participants.
