Subseasonal Predictability of Weekly Rainfall and Rainy Season Onset Over East Africa

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
This study evaluates the subseasonal predictability of weekly rainfall and rainy season onset over East Africa using the ECMWF extended range forecast model. Results show strong skill in forecasting weekly rainfall up to 4 weeks ahead, with higher accuracy during the March–May ‘long rains’ season.

BENEFITS OF OPERATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHY FOR OIL SPILL MANAGEMENT

open access: yes, 2014
SAR techniques are commonly thought for oil spill detection and monitoring. Operational services are soon to come at European scale thanks to the development of GMES services and the strong investment of the European maritime security Agency in the field.

Climatology and Trends of Sub‐Daily Precipitation Extremes in Croatia

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Sub‐daily extreme precipitation indices reveal pronounced spatial variability, with the highest intensities and frequencies across the Adriatic region and the highlands. Seasonal and diurnal patterns highlight distinct regional behaviour, including summer maxima over the continental interior and nocturnal or early‐morning peaks along the Adriatic coast.

Operational oceanography in France : the Coriolis project [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
An operational oceanographic system is being developed in France to monitor and forecast ocean behavior. It is composed of three projects: - Sea-surface observation using satellite sensors, - ln situ measurements from ships, moored or drifting autonomous systems, - Assimilation of in-situ and satellite data in an ocean circulation modal.

Changing Water Resources in the Indus Basin: A Multi‐Model Budyko‐Based Analysis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Budyko‐based analysis evaluates historical (1962–2005) and future hydroclimatic change across the Indus River Basin. Budyko shifts indicate rising atmospheric evaporative demand and increasing energy limitation under future scenarios. ABSTRACT Assessing hydroclimatic variability and future water availability is crucial for sustainable water‐resource ...

Re-estimation of the vertical sensible heat flux by determining the environmental temperature on a single-point tower measurement

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
Surface energy balance has always been a goal of those studying the Earth’s climate system. However, many studies have demonstrated that turbulent heat fluxes are usually underestimated by eddy covariance (EC) measurements, such that the energy balance ...

Tracking Summer Greenland Blocking: The Upstream Pathway Shapes Historical Extremes and Future Change

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
This study investigates summer Greenland atmospheric blocking using the Lagrangian tracking Python package blocktrack applied to ERA5 reanalysis and CMIP6 models. Two types of blocks—upstream (Northern Canada origin) and retrograding (Northern Atlantic origin)—are distinguished, with upstream blocks driving recent observed frequency increasing trends ...

From theory to practical “operational fisheries oceanography”, an emerging field for linking species ecology, operational oceanography and fisheries assessment needs

open access: yes, 2019
The response of fish populations to environmental variability has been a central focus of fisheries ecology over the past decades, with several stock assessment frameworks beginning to incorporate environmentally driven processes.

Characterising City Scale Heat Climatology for Australian Climate Zones

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect in Australian cities peaks at night, intensifying under dry conditions, clear skies, increased solar radiation, and low wind speeds. Long‐term observations show that nighttime temperatures in major cities have warmed faster than their rural surroundings and future climate projections fail to capture this disparity ...
